Top NATO Military Commander Holds Closed-Door Meeting In Turkey

Turkish Press
October 4, 2012

Adm. George Stavridis, the commander of US European Command (USEUCOM) and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), has met with Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Ozel in Ankara in a little-publicized visit.

The meeting took place on Tuesday at General Staff headquarters but was only announced to the public in a statement released by the General Staff on Wednesday. The talks were closed to the press and the statement did not elaborate on what Stavridis and Ozel discussed.

Stavridis visit Turkey for regional discussions

ANKARA: Navy Adm. James G. Stavridis, who holds the two highest strategic positions in NATO, discussed the “events transpiring in the Levant” during a two-day visit to Turkey this week, according to his official website.

The visit, which took place on Oct. 1 and 2, became public through an announcement by the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) on its website on Oct. 2. Stavridis spent the first day of his visit in İzmir. On Oct. 2, he held separate meetings with Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel and Defense Minister İsmet Yılmaz.

The Allied Air Command in İzmir came under scrutiny during the discussions. The command in İzmir was most recently on the public agenda during the debates over NATO’s early warning system in Kürecik, Malatya, which is a part of NATO’s missile defense shield. The Kürecik radar system was installed to observe Iranian skies for any missile threat.

Stavridis heads both the U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) and is the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR). The SACEUR is responsible to NATO’s highest military authority, the Military Committee, for the conduct of all NATO military operations.

NATO chief’s term extended one year

The NATO military alliance is extending the term in office of its current chief, allowing him to remain in office until the end of July 2014, the Associated Press reported.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, a former Danish prime minister, took office in 2009. Since then, he has overseen operations in Afghanistan and the air campaign over Libya. He will leave office shortly before the conclusion of NATO’s combat operations in Afghanistan, at the end of 2014.

“I am honored by the trust and support the allied governments have shown me,” Fogh Rasmussen said in a brief appearance yesterday.

Ambassadors from the 28 NATO countries made the decision to extend his term yesterday.

NATO chiefs are traditionally appointed for a four-year term with the possibility of a year’s extension.

There have been cases in which a NATO chief’s term has been extended for a few months beyond that, but in recent times secretaries-general have not been given full second terms.

Turkish parliament authorizes cross-border military operations in Syria

====

“Why would you hide this from the people? Will it be your children that go to war? People are not going to know why they have sent their children to war.”

[A] real anti-war storm has been initiated by Turkish and foreign activists on social networks both inside and outside of Turkey. The hashtag #savasahayir (no to war) has quickly spread beyond Turkish borders into global social networking.

====

Turkey’s parliament has authorized cross-border military operations into Syria ‘when necessary.’ The move follows a cross-border mortar-shelling into Turkey which Damascus has apologized for.

Parliament voted 320-129 in favor of the bill, though the government was quick to eliminate the perception they country preparing for a unilateral military assault.

“The bill is not for war…It has deterrent qualities,” Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay told reporters after the vote on Thursday.

He stressed that Turkey’s priority was to act in conjunction with “international institutions” on Syria. Atalay further said the Syrian government “has admitted what it did and apologized.” The deputy premier added that Syria had given its assurances “such an incident would not be repeated.”

The Turkish army has been shelling Syrian military positions since Wednesday in retaliation for shelling conducted from Syrian territory that killed five civilians.

The government-initiated debates in the Turkish parliament took place behind closed doors. The cabinet of Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan claimed the Syrian military had launched an act of aggression against Turkey.

MP Muharrem Ince from the opposition Republican People’s Party said the motion was dangerous as it had no clearly defined limits.

“You can wage a world war with [this motion],” Hürriyet Daily News cites him as saying.

Ince also lambasted the fact that the session took place behind closed doors.

“Why would you hide this from the people? Will it be your children that go to war? People are not going to know why they have sent their children to war,” he said.

On Wednesday at least three mortar bombs fired from Syria killed five civilians and wounded at least eight in the Turkish town of Akcakale. It was the second such mortar attack on the Turkish town since last Friday. Foreign Minister Davutoglu warned he would take action if there were a repeat in the wake of the shelling.

After a heated debate an urgent parliamentary session has opted to apply the new law.

Originally the bill targeted militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighting for an independent Kurdish state for the last three decades. The Kurds have bases in northern Iraq, de facto, not controlled by the government in Baghdad. The Turkish military has conducted a number of air and ground assaults on Kurdish positions in Iraq…

The debates around the move have sparked sharp negative reactions among the Turkish population. While a small group of anti-war protesters rallied outside the Turkish parliament in Ankara, a real anti-war storm has been initiated by Turkish and foreign activists on social networks both inside and outside of Turkey. The hashtag #savasahayir (no to war) has quickly spread beyond Turkish borders into global social networking.

Turkish Actions Designed To Trigger NATO Confrontation With Syria?

====

The UN and NATO have condemned an incident of shelling across the Syrian-Turkish border. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urged Turkey not to break ties with Syria. NATO supports Turkey, but a collective military response to Syria’s action will not follow.

Turkey has asked the UN Security Council to take “necessary action” to stop Syrian “aggression”. A mother of a large family and her four children were killed and another 13 injured on Wednesday when a mortar shell fired from Syria hit a house in the border region of Akcakale.

Ankara believes that the attack was carried out by a Syrian military unit. In response, Turkey launched attacks on the Syrian territory from where the mortar attack was supposed to have been carried out. Syria’s Information Minister Omran Zoabi has expressed sincere condolences to the Turkish families of the victims and to the Turkish people. He confirmed that Damascus was determined to maintain peaceful relations with the Turkish people. He also noted that several terrorist groups had been operating in the border region, and their activity had posed a threat not only to Syria but also to security of the entire region.

In response to Turkey’s request, the NATO North Atlantic Council held an emergency meeting that fully supported Turkey and urged the Syrian regime to put an end to any aggressive actions immediately. At the same time, according to the Western press, it’s too early to say about the application of the 5th article of the Washington Treaty that provides for exercising the right for collective response by all NATO member countries in case of an armed attack on a member country.

The article was recalled in June when Syria’s air defence systems shot down a Turkish fighter jet. However, matters didn’t come to that.

At present, according to NATO sources, consultations are being held on the basis of information provided by Turkey. The sources insist that it’s too early to speculate on a possible collective response.

However, it’s not excluded that the Turkish army will receive a mandate to carry out operations on Syrian territory on Thursday. Here is a report from our special correspondent in Turkey Olga Khaldyz.

“Permission to carry out military operations outside Turkey will expire on the 17th of October. The Turkish parliament extends it annually to carry out special operations against militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party. On Thursday, the parliament will hold an emergency session that will most likely discuss the issue of granting permission to the Turkish army to carry out operations also on Syrian territory,” Olga Khaldyz said.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tyyip Erdogan made this request Wednesday night. He insisted on the need to respond timely and swiftly and taking necessary measures against risks and threats to national security.

On his part, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged Ankara to keep channels of communications with Damascus open. They are necessary to ease tension triggered by the incident of shelling.

Who's responsible for terrorist acts in Syria ?

Obama.Ban+Ki+Moon+World+Leaders.jpg

1) Obama signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for Syrian terrorists seeking to depose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government.  Obama’s order, approved earlier this year and known as an intelligence “finding,” broadly permits the CIA and other U.S. agencies to provide support that could help the terrorists oust Assad.  C.I.A. officers are operating secretly in southern Turkey. The weapons, including automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and some antitank weapons, are being funneled mostly across the Turkish border by way of a shadowy network of intermediaries including Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood and paid for by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The United States is setting up joint military, intelligence and medical working teams with Israel, Turkey and Jordan.

2) British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Britain would step up its support for the armed groups in Syria, providing them with an additional £5 million (US$7.8 million). The money is used for bomb attacks in Syria.

3) An official source told a SANA reporter that the seized arms included Nato sniper rifles, machineguns, hunting rifles, explosive devices of various weights, devices for remote control detonation and an amount of batteries and electrical wires.

4) Belgian Senator Nele Lijnen said that she intends to launch a discussion at the Belgian Senate regarding the fact that the terrorists in Syria possess weapons made in Belgium.

5) The Swiss Authorities announced that they are investigating into information published by Sonntags Zeitung newspaper about hand grenades used by armed terrorist groups in Syria.

6) The weapons and military equipment recently discovered and seized by the Syrian Army in Idlib province proves NATO's arms and logistic support for terrorists in Syria.

7) The seized weapons in Salqain district in Idlib included 7.26 guns along with other weapons as well as boxes of gunshots with the words "NATO BALL" carved on them.

8) The Lebanese army intelligence has seized a large quantity of wea Lutfallah II container pons hidden inside cars aboard an Italian ship at Tripoli port, north of Lebanon, Lebanese security sources told Al-Manar TV.

9) This comes just days after the Lebanese Army Marines confiscated Lutfallah II arms shipment off the Lebanese port of Batoun while it was carrying 300,000 pounds of weapons within three containers. Reports said the cargo ship, which was flying the flag of Sierra-Leone, had left Libya and was bound to Syria.

10) Lebanese terrorist Mohammad Hussein Fares confessed to participating in smuggling weapons, militants and journalists into Syria and committing terrorists acts against Syrians.

11) Fares said that they smuggled assault rifles, RPG rounds, sniper rifles, LAW missiles, machineguns and cases of ammo, delivering them to Amoun, with al-Jarban coming later to distribute them among terrorists.

12) US, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are arming AL-QAEDA Terrorists to commit Terrorism in Syria.

13) Over 30,000 various weapons have been channelled to Syria since unrest flared up there in April last year, Amin Khteit says. The overall amount of explosives makes up 300 tons. The deliveries were made by Qatar and Saudi Arabia. They depend on the United States, which is making every effort to overpower Syria.

14) The authorities seized weapons smuggled from Turkey in Tal Abyad area on the Syrian-Turkish borders in Raqqa countryside.

15) A Turkish parliamentarian has stressed that Turkish ambulances are transporting weapons to terrorist groups in Syria, expressing their opposition to Ankara's policies on the Syrian case.

Russia warns NATO

Russia warns NATO against military intervention in Syria

September 29, 2012.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has warned NATO against seeking “pretexts for carrying out a military scenario” in Syria.

“In our contacts with partners in NATO and in the region, we are calling on them not to seek pretexts for carrying out a military scenario or to introduce initiatives such as humanitarian corridors or buffer zones,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov told reporters in Moscow on Tuesday.

Moscow has always advocated a resolution to the Syrian crisis through diplomatic and political means, defying imposition of any political transition on the country.

Gatilov also called for more restraint between Turkey and Syria, following Ankara’s repeated complaints against shells and artilleries that landed on its territory.

“We believe both Syrian and Turkish authorities should exercise maximum restraint in this situation, taking into account the rising number of radicals among the Syrian opposition who can intentionally provoke conflicts on the border.”

In August, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also rejected the idea of imposing no-fly zones over Syria.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011.

The anti-Syria Western regimes have been calling on President Bashar al-Assad to step down, but Russia and China oppose the Western drive to oust the Syrian president.

On February 4, Russia and China vetoed a Western-backed draft resolution on Syria at the UN Security Council. The two countries rejected the draft as “unbalanced.” They also blocked a European-drafted UN Security Council resolution against Syria on October 5, 2011.

President Assad said on August 1 that the country is engaged in a “crucial and heroic” battle that will determine the destiny of the nation.

Portugal jobless rate to hit 16.4% as income tax hike set for 2013

Oct 3, 2012

Portugal finance minister announces an income tax hike for the 2013 budget as the unemployment rate is expected to hit 16.4% the same year.

On Wednesday, the Portuguese Finance Minister Vitor Gaspar had announced that the average tax hike would rise from 9.8 percent to 13.2 percent in 2013, adding that the unemployment rate is also expected to rise from 16 percent to 16.4 percent next year.

The minister said the new austerity measures include a 4.0 percent “extraordinary tax” with Portugal's income tax brackets reduced from eight to five.

The recently announced austerity measures have been designed to replace the critically- defamed proposals arranged earlier.

This comes as train drivers in Portugal have begun a five-day strike on Monday to express their anger over new austerity measures imposed by the country's government.

Meanwhile, the global economic institutions including European Central Bank (ECB), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union (EU) are keeping an eye on Portugal's implementation of spending cuts and reforms required in return for the 78-billion-euro (USD 102 billion) rescue package the country received in 2011.

The international creditors have agreed to relax Portugal's deficit targets for 2012 and 2013, rewarding the Portuguese for pushing through reforms.

Battered by the global financial downturn, the Portuguese economy fell into a recession which led the country to negotiate in 2011 with the IMF for a bailout loan.

Spain, Greece, Italy, Cyprus and Portugal are all in recession and all five are receiving financial assistance from European bailout funds.

US preparing for attacks in Libya

US preparing for attacks in Libya to kill militants suspected of envoy killing

Oct 3, 2012

The US is preparing for military operations to kill or capture militants suspected of involvement in the killing of US diplomats in Libya during an anti-American protest at the US Consulate in Benghazi.

“The top-secret Joint Special Operations Command is compiling so-called target packages of detailed information about the suspects,” The New York Times reported Wednesday, quoting “senior [American] military and counterterrorism officials.

“Working with the Pentagon and the CIA (spy agency),” the report adds, “the command is preparing the dossiers as the first step in anticipation of possible orders from President [Barack] Obama to take action against those determined to have played a role in the attack.”

Possible military options, the report notes, would include “drone strikes, Special Operations raids like the one that killed Osama bin Laden and joint missions with Libyan authorities.”

The report also points out the decision by American officials come as the “weak Libyan government” seems incapable of detaining or even questioning those suspected of involvement in the reported attack that came amid angry demonstrations at the American diplomatic post in reaction to the publication of a US-made anti-Islam video that grossly insulted highly revered Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

The development comes nearly a month before US presidential election in early November as the Obama administration has come under increasing criticism by the rival Republican Party and its presidential nominee Mitt Romney over intelligence failures prior to the incident, including fresh accusations that repeated pleas for more security at the Benghazi compound had been ignored.

Any American military action inside Libya, however, would “risk casualties and almost certainly set off a popular backlash,” according to the US daily, as anti-American protest rallies still continue in many Muslim countries in reaction to US justification of the film’s release under the pretext of its free-speech rights, ignoring clear exceptions to the constitutional right that, for example, prohibits the use of the right to shout ‘fire’ in a crowded movie theatre.

US officials originally described the Benghazi incident as “spontaneous” but later claimed that it was an act of terrorism with links to al-Qaeda.

Meanwhile on Friday, the same daily emphasized in a report that US fears about lack of security for Americans in Libya have kept FBI intelligence agents and investigators from visiting the US consulate in Benghazi, forcing them to attempt to piece together the circumstances of the deadly attack on the diplomatic post from over 400 miles away in Tripoli.

Amnesty International: Instrument of War Propaganda

Ban.Ki.Moon.meets.Amnesty.International.jpg

Amnesty International has released satellite pictures of “craters” in Syria, citing : ”an increased use of heavy weaponry, including near residential areas”.

The BBC reports, quoting Amnesty: “Images from Anadan revealed more than 600 probable artillery impact craters from heavy fighting between Syrian armed forces and armed opposition groups.”

Further: “Turning Syria’s most populous city into a battlefield will have devastating consequences for civilians. The atrocities in Syria are mounting already,” warned Christoph Koettl, emergency response manager for Amnesty International USA, without acknowedging that the killings of civilians are committed by the US-NATO Free Syrian Army (FSA) rather than the government.

Vanunu Responds to Gunter Grass and My Question to SECURITY

Posted by John Tyrrell (cause founder)

It's a puzzle. Gunter Grass can't get into Israel. Vanunu can't get out. Bibi plays the fool holding up a pantomime bomb complete with fuse. Please take action responding to media articles and writing to your political representative. My Member of the British Parliament has undertaken to ask a question about Vanunu after I contacted him.

As a result of concern about people leaving the cause (over 100 went, so there seems to be concerted action against us) many more joined. And many more are taking action. Please add your voice. Thank you.

Syria before UN: 'New Colonial Policies Under Pretext of Humanitarian Intervention'

Al-Moallem.jpg

Al-Moallem: Well-Known Countries Pursue New Colonial Policies Under Pretext of Humanitarian Intervention

Oct 01, 2012

NEW YORK, (SANA) - Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem
on Monday delivered a speech before the United Nations General
Assembly.

Following the full text of al-Moallem's speech

Mr. Vuk Jeremic President of the 67th session of the General Assembly,
Excellences, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would like to congratulate you and your friendly country, the
Republic of Serbia, on your election as President of the General
Assembly at its current session, and to wish you success in conducting
our work in a way that brings back to the President of the General
Assembly its important and neutral role in fulfilling his duties away
from any political, national or international agendas that violate the
rules of international law and contradict efforts to achieve security
and stability in the world. We also wish success to the Secretary
General of the United Nations in carrying out his duties in enhancing
the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United
Nations.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen, Our contemporary world faces many
events that are affecting its states, and continue to cast their
shadow on the international scene. Many countries are facing
political, economic and financial crises which exceed the capacity of
States to cope with their consequences individually. While the peoples
of the world wait to see effective and coordinated international
efforts to overcome those crises, the reality indicates, instead, the
escalation of hegemony and domination on the fortunes of nations and
peoples in a way that contradicts the principles and purposes
enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and the norms of
international law. Instead of seeking to contribute to the settlement
of regional and international disputes by peaceful means, some
well-known countries continue to pursue new colonial policies based on
political hypocrisy in dealing with those crises, under the pretext of
humanitarian intervention these countries interfere in domestic
affairs of states, and impose unilateral economic sanctions that lack
moral and legal basis, and under the pretext of concepts such as
"Responsibility to Protect", drums of war are beaten, and sedition and
unrest are spreading and damaging the structure of national societies.
Perhaps, worse of all, is to see permanent members of the Security
Council, who launched wars under the pretext of combating terrorism,
now support terrorism in my country without any regard to the United
Nations resolutions that established the regulations and mechanisms
for concerted international efforts to fight this scourge away from
political polarization and double standards.

Mr. President,

For more than one year now, my country has been facing organized
terrorism, that affected our citizens, our human and scientific
resources, national establishments, and also much of Syria's historic
and archeological landmarks through terrorist bombings, assassinations
and massacres, looting and sabotage activities that horrified citizens
in many parts of Syria. The latest example of this terrorist bombing
took place recently in Damascus on 26 / 9 / 2012. A terrorist group
with the name of "Jabhat al-Nosrah", one of the al-Qaeda arms, took
the responsibility of this attack. It is no surprise that the Security
Council failed to condemn this and other terrorist bombings, because
some of its members are supporting such acts. This terrorism which is
externally supported is accompanied by unprecedented media provocation
based on igniting religious extremism sponsored by well-known states
in the region to facilitate the flow of arms, money and fighters
through the borders of some neighboring countries. Those states either
turn a blind eye to the activities of terrorist groups crossing their
borders, or provide active material and logistical support from their
territory for armed terrorist groups. These facts make me question
whether this international consensus by our states on combating
terrorism was serious, or it was just merely ink on paper? In what
context can we classify the explicit request of the United States from
the armed terrorist groups not to surrender their arms as a response
to amnesty decrees and decisions issued by the Syrian leadership? We
also wonder to what extent the statements of Qatar, Saudi Arabia,
Turkey, the United States, and France that clearly induce and support
terrorism in Syria with money, weapons and foreign fighters, are in
line with the international responsibilities of these countries in
combating terrorism. One of the ironies that we face is represented by
encouraging the extremists in countries within and outside our region
to go to the borders of Syria, and enter country, to carry out
terrorist acts under the name of "jihad" in collaboration with
terrorists from the inside, and this is a fact confirmed by reports of
both international and Arab observers. Until today, and as a result of
this terrorism, Syria has lost thousands of martyrs from the military
and civilians as a price of its quest to defend the integrity of the
Syrian state and its citizens in the face of this global terrorist
campaign.

Mr. President, The Syrian government has the initiative to call for
dialogue at the beginning of the events that took place, without that
call finding any positive response from most opposition parties. Also,
My Government responded positively throughout the crisis for each
sincere initiative that aims to help finding a peaceful solution based
on national dialogue among Syrians, and rejects external manipulation,
and emphasizes preserving the blood of the Syrians and the unity of
Syria and its future. Based on this principled position, and despite
the conviction of the Syrian leadership that there are no sincere
intentions from some regional and international parties that push for
the escalation of the Syrian crisis and fueling its fie and prolonging
it through thwarting all attempts for dialogue, and insisting on
creating a state of instability to ensure the need for foreign
interference, despite all that, Syria cooperated with the Arab
Observers Mission, and the subsequent international initiatives linked
to the work of the UN Special Envoy Kofi Annan. Syria, out of
principle, received the United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria
(UNSMIS), and provided it with all the facilities that enabled it to
deploy in an unprecedented record time. The Syrian leadership, also,
announced its full commitment to the implementation of the Six Point
Plan presented by Mr. Annan, and started the practical implementation
of its provisions. It, also, welcomed the Geneva Communiqué that
stressed the need for the implementation of these provisions, but the
behavior of the armed groups that sought to exploit the Syrian
government's commitment to the plan and the Geneva Communiqué to
achieve gains on the ground and expand the area of their presence, in
addition to the statements issued by some Western and Arab countries,
all this clarified who are the actors and states working to thwart all
these Initiatives.

Syria has welcomed the appointment of Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi as the
Special Representative of the Secretary-General to succeed Mr. Annan,
and stressed its willingness to fully cooperate with him on the
principles agreed upon by the international community, particularly
the Six-Point Plan. I would like to tell you that the success of any
international effort requires, in addition to the commitment of the
Syrian government, committing these states supporting armed groups in
my country, particularly Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Libya and
others, to stop arming, funding, training and harboring armed
terrorist groups, and instead to encourage dialogue and renounce
violence.

Mr. President, For more than one year now, Syria has been saying that
what my country is witnessing is a two-sided problem: the first side
is linked to the need for political, economic and social reforms
demanded by the public; the second is the exploitation of those needs
and demands for objectives that are completely different from the
demands of the Syrian people and their interests, and make these
peaceful demands as a ladder for armed groups working to sow sedition
and undermine security in my country. I referred to this in my speech
from this podium last year. I come back today to tell you that the
state in Syria made serious and important reform steps that culminated
in a new constitution that embraces political pluralism, and was
adopted by referendum; consequently parliamentary elections, which
were open to multiple political parties, took place and, Now I tell
you that Syria is continuing to work with the patriotic components in
the opposition to build a new and pluralistic Syria that responds to
the aspirations of its people, and is determined at the same time to
carry her duties in protecting her people from jihadist and takfiri
terrorism, through which armed terrorist groups are working to spread
chaos and create sedition among Syrians and threaten their peaceful
coexistence.

Mr. President,

We heard calls from this podium, and on other platforms, some calls
from those who are ignorant of the facts or maybe ignoring them, or
also from those who are shareholders in exacerbating them, that
invites the President of the Syrian Arab Republic to step down. This
is a blatant interference in the domestic affairs of Syria, and the
unity of its people and its sovereignty.

The Syrian people is the only part authorized to choose its own future
and the shape of its own state that accommodates all groups and
spectrum of the Syrian people, including those who were deceived and
chose the wrong way. The Syrian people is the one to choose its
leadership through the ballot box which represents the most important
way of democracy and expression. If some countries that interfere in
the internal affairs of Syria are proud of their democracy and freedom
of decision of their people, the, it is better for those people to
choose its leadership through elections whose form is defined by the
new constitution and relevant laws, and then the ballot box will have
the final say.

I say to those countries enough illusions, and I invite the national
opposition to work together to stop the shedding of Syrian blood, and
to sit at the dialogue table and participate in the making of the
present and the future of Syria. We don’t bet on any party or factor
apart from the Syrian people which is determined, in all its
components, to reject all forms of foreign interference in its
domestic affairs, and to defeat the advocates of the project of
sectarianism, extremism and terrorism, because the bond is very strong
in my country between state policies and the aspirations of the
people.

Mr. President, Despite all that I said about what my country is
experiencing, we still believe in political solution as an essential
way to exit out of the crisis, and I call from this platform for:

First: all parties and political groups, inside and outside Syria, to
a constructive dialogue under the umbrella of the homeland, and the
doors of Syria, as is her heart, are open to anyone who wants
construction and dialogue. To achieve this, I call all countries
represented in the General Assembly to exert pressure to end violence
in my country through ending of arming, financing, harboring and
training of terrorist groups.

Second: the results of this national dialogue, after agreement by all
parties, will be the map and the future way of the country in
establishing a more pluralistic and democratic Syria.

Mr. President, These events in Syria have led to growing humanitarian
needs in several key sectors in areas affected by the terrorism of
Takfiri groups, which led to the worsening of the living conditions of
the Syrian citizens there. While my government is working hard to meet
the basic needs of citizens who have been forced by the violence of
the armed groups to flee their homes, some have sought to fabricate a
refugee crisis through inciting armed groups to intimidate Syrian
civilians in border areas and forcing them to flee to neighboring
countries. There, they are either accommodated in military training
camps, or in what resembles places of detention, amid arid of rugged
regions, and exploited their plight to get aid spent mostly on goals
that have no relevance to humanitarian objectives. I appeal from this
podium to those Syrian citizens to return to their towns and villages
where the state will guarantee their safe return and their precious
lives away from inhuman conditions they suffer in these camps.

At this point let me ask a legitimate question about the credibility
of those who claim to care for providing humanitarian assistance as a
response to the needs of the Syrians, and the consistency of those
claims with the policy of tightening economic sanctions that badly
affect the living conditions of the Syrian citizens. How can imposing
sanctions on the banking, health and transport sectors be consistent
with caring for the best interest of the Syrians? I also wonder if the
legitimate public demands of our citizens, to which the Syrian
leadership responded transparently and sincerely, can justify their
use as an excuse to continue providing all forms of military,
financial and media support to those killing innocent people in Syria,
including journalists, doctors, university professors and even
religious dignitaries? Or is this the practical interpretation of the
concept of "creative chaos" which only serve the expansionist
interests of Israel?

Mr. President, What is happening in my country must not make us lose
our basic compass which is Palestine and the Golan Heights, therefore
the Syrian Arab Republic confirms its adherence to her natural right
to restore the full occupied Syrian Golan up to the line of June 6th,
1967, and its refusal of all the measures taken by Israel, the
occupying power, to change the natural, geographical and demographic
aspects in clear violation of the relevant resolutions of the Security
Council, particularly its resolution No 497 of 1981. Syrian renews its
support for the legitimacy of recognition by international community
of a free and independent Palestinian State on the Palestinian
territories occupied in 1967.

The failure of efforts to achieve just and comprehensive peace in the
Middle East on the basis of international terms of reference adopted
by the international community as a basis for peace between
Palestinians and Israelis is due, as everyone knows, to the unilateral
positions and actions of Israel, particularly Israel's insistence on
continuing its settlement policy and evasion of requirements of peace.

Mr. President, My country renews the call for the international
community to work to free the Middle East of all weapons of mass
destruction, and we remind in this context of the initiative presented
by Syria during its membership of the Security Council by the end of
2003, and the call upon the Council to adopt it. Syria stresses that
evacuating the region of all weapons of mass destruction is
unachievable without forcing Israel, the only nuclear power in the
region, to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and to put its
nuclear facilities under the inspection of the International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA). At the same time we emphasize on what is
stipulated in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of the light of all
States to acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Mr. President, The insistence of the United States and countries of
the European Union and others to adopt unilateral economic measures
contradicts the regulations of international law and the principles of
free trade, and raises questions about the legality and morality of
such practices. Based on this, we call for the lifting of the embargo
imposed on Cuba by the United States for decades. We also renew our
call for the lifting and stopping of all unilateral coercive measures
imposed on the peoples of other countries, such as Venezuela, Belarus,
Iran, Syria and the DPRK.

Mr. President, Our aspiration to achieve a positive reform of the
international organization stems from our desire to find a world based
on justice, security and prosperity for all the peoples of the world,
away from the colonial tendencies of some countries that seek to
exploit the United Nations to achieve their own interests at the
expense of other countries. We are all hope that the United Nations
can take the people of the world to a better future that fulfills
their aspirations in life, coexistence, development and food
sufficiency away from all forms of tension, confrontation and wars,
pursuant to what is established by the United Nations Charter
principles and purposes seeking to preserve the sovereignty of States
and equality among them in rights and duties.

Thank you, Mr. President.

American 'freedom of thought'...

Bush.death.of.democracy.jpg

It wasn’t until the election of 2000, and the ascension of George W. Bush, representing international organized crime and promising war and financial collapse with the profits to those who saw him “appointed” to office that America got its “moron.”

Years ago, there was some free press; in America it was men like Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather. We watched the last of this group, Rather, be systematically destroyed by the Bush family in order to protect a handful of family secrets.

The American press has been silenced and that silencing has not just continued but expanded to armies of operatives dominating internet websites, endless millions of emails, social networks, search engines, cleansing the internet of unpleasant facts, scouring our consciousness of freedom of thought...

Iran: 'holding dialogue is better than arming terrorists groups'

Advisor of the Iranian Islamic Revolution.jpg

Velayati: West is Waging War Against Syria, Syria's Victory Inevitable

Sep 29, 2012

TEHRAN, (SANA) – Advisor of the Iranian Islamic Revolution's Supreme Leader for International Affairs, Ali Akbar Velayati, said that the western countries waged a war against Syria to compensate for their losses in the regions of North Africa and the Middle East.

In a speech on the occasion of starting the new academic year at the Iranian National Defense University, Velayati stressed that Syria's victory over the armed terrorists groups, USA, and western and Arab countries is inevitable.

He added that some countries which wanted to downfall the Syrian government are now adopting Iran's calls for holding dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition.

He highlighted that the stances of some regional countries, which were arming and funding the Syrian opposition, have changed in the last period.

Velayati expressed regret over the stances of some Arab countries which know nothing about democracy and falsely pretend they are keen on the Syrians and their right to vote.

He said that the confrontation line between the East and West is in the Middle East and in Syria, adding that the presence of US and Russian military fleets in the Mediterranean Sea proves that a new cold war began, with the Middle East in its core.

Premier al-Halqi: Solution of Crisis in Syria on Right Track

Sep 27, 2012

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – Prime Minister, Wael al-Halqi, stressed that the Syrian people's unity and belief in what the Syrian Army is achieving are the means to overcome the conspiracy and beat terrorism.

The Premier clarified, during his meeting Thursday with head of the Syrian Bar Association Nizar Skif and members of the Association, that the political route of the crisis is going towards improvement as there is a positive shift of world countries regarding the crisis, in addition to communication and dialogue being carried out with the national opposition, which create an appropriate atmosphere for holding a national reconciliation conference in the upcoming stage.

The two sides reviewed the association situation and the challenges facing lawyers, in addition to means of overcoming theses difficulties.

Nuclear threat Israel

A new action from the cause Free Mordechai Vanunu

Vanunu Responds to Gunther Grass and My Question to SECURITY

The International Press and in particular the Israeli Media have been buzzing all weekend regarding a new poem by German writer and Nobel laureate Gunter Grass, in which he calls Israel's Nuclear Whistle Blower, Mordechai Vanunu, a "paragon" "modern-day hero" and a "righteous man, who has remained loyal to his country the entire time."

Vanunu told the AFP, "I am very happy to be in the league of Gunter Grass. Vanunu would be happy to get from the interior ministry of Israel the title 'persona non grata' and they can send me out of Israel."

Earlier this year, Grass angered Israel in his piece entitled, "What Must Be Said" and has been barred from entering Israel ever since. In his new poem, Grass compares Vanunu to the Biblical Joseph, who was thrown into a cistern by his brothers.

I wrote Vanunu asking for comment on that and he replied...

October 1, 2012: Vanunu Responds to Gunter Grass and My Question to SECURITY

Thank You Mr. Gunter Grass for your poem "What Must Be Said". Some one else had said it very clear 26 years ago this week in London. And for that they awarded me, 26 years in Israel prison…

Israel's nuclear power endangers an already fragile world peace… But why do I forbid myself to name that other land in which for years—although kept secret—a usable nuclear capability has grown beyond all control, because no scrutiny is allowed. . .

Only thus can one give help to Israelis and Palestinians—still more, all the peoples, neighbour-enemies living in this region occupied by madness—and finally, to ourselves as well. Thank you.

Vanunu referred to "Was gesagt werden muss" ("What Must Be Said"), which drew attention to the "nuclear power Israel" endangering peace and concern over the consequences of a potential Israeli attack against Iran and slammed the West’s hypocrisy.

In the poem just released entitled "Hero of our days", Grass praises Vanunu as a "model" because "he helped to bring the truth" to the public and writes that Vanunu, the son of a rabbi, "pursued the study of the Torah’s rules and then decided to convert to Christianity."

Grass never interviewed Vanunu, but I have.

Vanunu explained to me that while he lived in his hometown of Marrakech, Morocco, his father ran a successful grocery store until 1963, when Vanunu was nine years old and the Zionists arrived and convinced his father to move the family to Israel.
"I grew up in an Orthodox Jewish home, but rejected it all by the eighth grade. When I went to the University, I became an existentialist."

This very week 26 years ago, Israel kidnapped Vanunu and the London Sunday Times published the front-page story of Israel’s WMD Facility: See http://links.causes.com/s/clD2i1?r=l713

Vanunu told me, "I really had no clue what I was doing by getting baptized a Christian; I just felt like I had to do it. It was my way to become a new being. It wasn’t until after my trial [1986] that I started to read the New Testament."

"While I was in prison, I would read aloud for a half hour, twice a day. I would read the entire New Testament and begin it again when I finished the Book of Revelation. I did this for myself, as well as for my captors-not so much the prison guards, but the ones who watched me on camera twenty-four hours a day. Once I covered up the camera that spied on me and was punished with one month in solitary, without any books or radio; no contact with anyone anywhere was allowed. It was just them, watching me, constantly watching me."

"The Shen Beet, you know, like the FBI and the Mossad, like your CIA— they were watching me. They tortured me by keeping a light on in my cell constantly for two years. They told me it was because they were afraid I would commit suicide, and the oppressive camera was for my safety. They recruited the guards and other prisoners to irritate me. They would deprive me of sleep by making loud noises near my cell all night long. I chose to read them 1 Corinthians 13 instead: 'Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with THE TRUTH! It always protects, it always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails.'

"For the first five years, twice a day I would loudly pray by reading Bible verses. I would also read the Anglican service from the Book of Common Prayer. I did it twice a day, everyday, for five years. I began to see I had become like a machine. I knew if I continued I would lose my mind. So after that, I only prayed in silence. Although I knew I was driving them nuts with my loud praying, it was driving me nuts, too. I changed my routine. I was allowed outside every day for two hours; I had been jogging around in circles for the two hours, but now I changed my routine. I began to alter that and all my routines so I would not be like a machine. I refused to eat when they brought my food in. I would decide everyday what time I would eat and what I would eat. I chose a different time everyday to do anything. The camera was there to learn my behavior so they could manipulate me. I knew I had to constantly change my routine. I began reading more books about health, nutrition, history, philosophy, and literature, and kept my prayer life quiet."

I asked Vanunu, "When you were baptized in Sydney, just a few months before you were abducted and tried, you took the name John Crossman. Was that because of St. John of the Cross and his The Dark Night of The Soul?"

Vanunu replied, "I haven’t read him."
I explained, "Not many have, and even fewer understand what he was talking about. John of the Cross, was a Spanish poet and mystic who wrote about the contemplative life and the divine union of the soul with God in this life. He was an ardent disciple of Theresa of Avilla’s reforms, which greatly agitated the church hierarchy during the time of the Spanish Inquisition. He received a great deal of abuse for his thoughts and spent a lot of time in prison, writing."

In their new book "Spies Against Armageddon" Israeli journalist Yossi Melman and CBS News correspondent Dan Raviv write:

"Shin Bet and Malmab [the director of security for Israel’s defense community] claim that Vanunu continues to be a security risk because of the knowledge in his head. Thus, they insisted that he banned from leaving Israel and his movements were restricted."

Last week, on "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart held up a photo of Bibi at the UN with his cartoon bomb and said, "Bibi, bubbe. What's with the Wile E. Coyote nuclear bomb? Like you don't know what a BOMB looks like-just go downstairs and have a look."

A few weeks ago, a friend of Vanunu’s who owns a bookstore in Jerusalem, emailed me that he wanted to help Vanunu and if I would mail him copies of 'BEYOND NUCLEAR: Mordechai Vanunu's FREEDOM of SPEECH Trial and - My Life as a Muckraker 2005-2010', he would give all the proceeds to Vanunu.

When I mailed a box of 38, I was told the books should arrive in Israel by September 11th, but as of this writing the book seller has not received them, and so I wonder if SECURITY is holding them?
Inside the box, I included this letter: Hi! Hoping these books will soon be occupying space on planes heading all over the world and VMJC’s FREEDOM will follow. Please let me know after you receive this.

Between 13-16 September, I will be in Virginia following up with Ron Paul, some senators and reps RE: these questions [and now more!] that I delivered to Ron Paul’s Media Rep on August 26th: 'Dear RON PAUL,
Will you support the grass roots initiative that is seeking to establish every June 8th as USS LIBERTY REMEMBRANCE DAY?

In April 1999, thirty-six members of the US House of Representatives signed a letter calling for Israel’s Nuclear Whistle Blowers release from prison because they believed "we have a duty to stand up for men and women like Mordechai Vanunu who dare to articulate a brighter vision for humanity."

Were you one of the 36?

French troops in Algeria

Between 1954, when the Algerian uprising against French colonial rule broke out, and 1962, when Algeria became an independent republic, some two million French soldiers crossed the Mediterranean to fight against the FLN's (National Liberation Front) guerrillas in an operation that marked a generation. Most of these soldiers were conscripts. In Paris, the developing war in Algeria led to the fall of six prime ministers, the collapse of the IVth republic, the return of General de Gaulle to power at the head of the Vth republic -- a vehicle of his own creation -- and near civil war following an attempted right-wing coup in Algiers.

During the war, atrocities were committed on both sides, and after it, with the general amnesty declared at Evian as part of its negotiated settlement, many of these were officially forgotten. France turned to interior self-modernization, while Algeria began a process of nation-building under the tutelage of the victorious FLN.

More recently, however, there has been a move to disinter the past in the wake of recent, well-publicized revelations in France concerning the extent of human-rights violations, specifically the torture and murder of those suspected of being members or sympathizers of the FLN, by the French army in Algeria and by the authorities in France itself. In recent months both the French president, Jacques Chirac, and the prime minister, Lionel Jospin, have referred to these reports, mostly stressing the need to consider them in their historical context and talking of the need for "national healing" to take place. "Let history do its work," said Chirac, interviewed recently on the television channel TF1. Former generals have also appeared on television admitting that they used torture to interrogate suspects during the Algerian War.

With the official records of the period remaining largely closed, however, and with those committing them never having been held accountable either for their orders or for their acts, other voices have been a lot less diplomatic than have those of the political establishment.

French troops in Syria

In 1920, an independent Arab kingdom of Syria was established under king Faysal of the Hashemite family. His rule ended after few months, following the clash between Syrian forces and regular French forces at the battle of Maysalun. French troops occupied Syria later that year after the league of Nations put Syrian under the French mandate. With the fall of France in 1940, Syria came under the control of the Vichy Government until the British and Free French occupied the country in July 1941. Continuing pressure from Syrian nationalist groups forced the French to evacuate their troops in April 1946, leaving the country in the hands of a republican government that had been formed during the mandate.

Russian Security Official: Syrian Government Controls Situation

Alexey Plotnikov, an expert.Security Committee.Russian Duma, .jpgRussian Security Official: Syrian Government Controls Situation, Opposition's Operations Prove They Are Mercenaries

Sep 29, 2012

MOSCOW, (SANA) – Alexey Plotnikov, an expert at the Security Committee of the Russian Duma, considered on Saturday that the Syrian Government is in control of the situation while the operations perpetrated by the opposition's gangs against Syrian civilians prove to the local and international community that these gangs are mercenaries and are not seeking to defend the Syrian people.

In an interview with Russia Today channel, Plotnikov said the opposition are spending the money that they receive through fighting and carrying out what they are ordered to do.

He added that changing the current situation in Syria requires the opposition to seriously engage into dialogue and negotiations if they really care for the destiny of the Syrian people as using force will lead to no way.

The Russian official stressed Russia's continued support to Syria to prevent it from getting to where other Arab states have reached.

Russia Calls to Unite Efforts to End Violence in Syria

Lavrov Calls on International Community to Unite Efforts to End Violence in Syria and Launch Negotiations

Sep 29, 2012

NEW YORK, (SANA) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held the countries, that reject the implementation of Geneva agreement on Syria, responsible for pushing Syria even deeper into internecine strife and continue militarizing the crisis as they only call the Syrian government to stop violence and encourage the opposition to continue the acts of violence.

Speaking at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly on Friday, Lavrov said "The international community should unify efforts to coerce all sides of the Syrian crisis to end violence immediately, launch dialogue and reach a middle-ground solution on the reforms that satisfy all spectrums of the Syrian people."

"Russia resolutely condemns all kinds of violence, from wherever source it comes from, and is convinced that there is still an opportunity to undertake collective actions," Lavrov added, asserting that extremist organizations including al-Qaeda have become more active in Syria and carried out terrorist acts against the inhabitants and the public infrastructure.

He underscored that practical steps to overcome the crisis need to begin through halting violence, releasing of prisoners and hostages and supplying of additional humanitarian aid, as this will create conditions to start an inter-Syrian dialogue.

He expressed Russia's support to the efforts of the UN envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi, asserting that his country will exert all efforts to make his mission a success.

Lavrov said that Russia supports the peoples' right to determine their own future and move to the most effective ways of state governance, stressing the importance that these changes take place away from violence and foreign interference.

Lavrov stressed the importance that the unfolding situation in the Middle East won't push the Palestinian cause to the peripheries, calling for a just and comprehensive settlement that leads to establishing a viable Palestinian state.

''States have to protect themselves from provocations and abusing religious feelings, but terrorist acts are unjustifiable, and so are attacks on diplomats and the UN staff,'' Lavrov added.

He added that slapping sanctions is, according to the UN Charter, the prerogative of the UN an such decisions are taken unanimously. H. Zain/ M. Ismael/Mazen

The Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate that killed four Americans was the spark that ignited growing frustration with the armed groups that have proliferated since the ouster of Moammar Gadhafi. Continuing to chant anti-Ansar slogans, the crowd, swelling into the thousands, moved on to try to storm a separate compound where the powerful pro-government Rafallah al-Sahati militia was entrusted with guarding a big weapons store, and opened fire on the assailants. Looters carried weapons out of the compound as men chanted: "Say to Ansar al-Shariah: 'Benghazi will be your inferno!'"

A source at the movement, who preferred not to be named, told the UPI that four of the salafist jihadist movement in al-Zarqa city, northeastern Jordan, already headed to Syria.

The source noted that the salafists, who are between 25 and 30, arrived on Thursday evening in Daraa in northern Syria.

Mohammad al-Shalabi, nicknamed Abi Sayyaf, who is a leader at the salafist jihadist movement in Jordan, announced last Sunday that he sent four of his followers to Syria for 'Jihad'.

He noted that some of the salafists go to Syria regularly, while others go personally.

Some weeks ago the Belgian Senator Nele Lijnen said that she intends to launch a discussion at the Belgian Senate regarding the fact that the terrorists in Syria possess weapons made in Belgium.

But Belgium is not only responsible for sending weapons for terrorist bomb attacks in Syria.

The Belgian State Security knows that Belgian jihadists are going to Syria for organizing these bomb attacks.

On August 3th, the Belgian State Security "could not confirm" that Belgian jihadists are fighting in Syria while the newspapers 'Het Belang van Limburg' and 'Gazet van Antwerpen' argued the opposite: "The State Security confirmed the presence of Belgian jihadists in Syria".

The Flemish newspapers relied on a report by Reuters, dated July 31, citing statements from "several rebel commanders in the north-west Syria," according to which "Muslims in Great Britain, Belgium and the United States had joined the Free Syrian Army (SLA)". On July 13th, Reuters pointed out a flood "of thousands of assault rifles Belgian FN FAL was in the hands of the rebels".

In its annual reports, the Belgian State Security explains how and why she follows people attracted by fighting abroad: there was attention for Iraq, then, from 2010, to the movement towards Pakistan-Afghanistan border area; Finally, most recently, to new locations: "If the Afghan-Pakistan area, more than Iraq, was still popular in 2010 with the majority of volunteers for jihad", the Belgian State Security wrote in his latest report, "some of them began to plot their way to Yemen, Somalia and the Caucasus". And Syria now? Obviously. 'Where they are beaten, those who return and who actually participated in the fighting have gained knowledge on how to handle weapons, strategy and tactics of war,' noted the Belgian State Security...

GENEVA, (SANA) - Russia, China and Cuba voted on Friday against a United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) decision to extend the mandate of the , International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, while India, Uganda and Philippines abstained.

Syria's Representative at UNHRC, Faisal al-Hamwi described the decision as shameful, politicized and selective, and ''highly tolerant with al-Qaeda terrorists.''

In his statement on September 17 before the UNHRC in Geneva, al-Hamwi said that the International Commission of Inquiry report lacks accuracy and objectivity and disregards facts, especially the role of international and regional parties in stoking the crisis in Syria through media instigation, funding and training terrorists and al-Qaeda members to send them to Syria.

Spain Protesters Storm Parliament As They Rage Against Austerity, Many Beaten By Police

Sept. 25th, 2012

MADRID — Spain's government was hit hard by the country's financial crisis on multiple fronts Tuesday as protestors enraged with austerity cutbacks and tax hikes clashed with police near Parliament, a separatist-minded region set elections seen as an independence referendum and the nation's high borrowing costs rose again.

More than 1,000 riot police blocked off access to the Parliament building in the heart of Madrid, forcing most protesters to crowd nearby avenues and shutting down traffic at the height of the evening rush hour.

Police used batons to push back some protesters at the front of the march attended by an estimated 6,000 people as tempers flared, and some demonstrators broke down barricades and threw rocks and bottles toward authorities.

Television images showed officers beating protesters in response, and an Associated Press television producer saw five people dragged away by police and two protesters bloodied. Spanish state TV said at least 28 were injured, including two officers, and that 22 people were detained. Independent Spanish media reported higher numbers that could not immediately be confirmed.

The demonstration, organized with an "Occupy Congress" slogan, drew protesters from all walks of life weary of nine straight months of painful economic austerity measures imposed by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and his solid majority of lawmakers. Smaller demonstrations Tuesday attracted hundreds of protesters in Barcelona and Seville.

Angry Madrid marchers who got as close as they could to Parliament, 250 meters (yards) away, yelled "Get out!, Get out! They don't represent us! Fire them!"
