US Election 2012: Obama misleads American voters

card.jpg

The Obama administration claims in all kind of television documentaries that its so-called peace process failed because the american government was 'betrayed' by the Israeli politicians.  But that is a lie and it is misleading the American voter.

In February 2011, more than 100 nations voted for a U.N. resolution that would have condemned illegal Israeli settlements and halted any new construction. The United States vetoed it...

---

History

1) On November 15, 2010, U.S. President Barack Obama praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for urging his cabinet to accept a U.S. proposal to extend a freeze on West Bank settlement building for 90 days. Under the plan, Washington would block UN resolutions critical of Israel, and supply Israel with fighter jets worth $3 billion. The US government also promised Israel that after the 90-day moratorium, they would not seek an extension, and settlement construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem (all of which is illegal under international law) could continue unabated.

2) In February 2011, more than 100 nations voted for a U.N. resolution that would have condemned illegal Israeli settlements and halted any new construction. The United States vetoed it.

3) On February 19, 2011, Israel said it was deeply grateful to the United States after it vetoed a United Nations resolution put forward by the Palestinian leadership condemning Israeli settlement activity.

4) On  Oct 27, 2011, Israeli jetfighters engaged in aerial bombing of the Palestinian city of Khan Yunes in the Gaza Strip.

NATO’s “Liberation” of Libya: grenade attacks and car explosions

Intelligence HQ in Libyan capital under grenade attack, militias clash outside

---

Libya’s intelligence headquarters has been struck by a rocket propelled grenade as two rival militia groups clashed in Tripoli, says Al Arabiya TV.
At least five people have been injured, while the building has been partially destroyed, RT’s Paula Slier reports.

According to Al Jazeera the two militia groups clashed as one gang was trying to rescue one of its members, who had been captured by the other gang.

The Central Tripoli Hospital also came under fire as militiamen attacked one another.

Earlier on Sunday a car bomb targeted a police station in the city of Benghazi injuring three police officers.

The attacks come just days after some 100 civilians and self-proclaimed rebels broke into the Libyan National General Congress, forcing the parliament to postpone a vote on a new cabinet.

More than a year after Muammar Gaddafi`s regime was dismantled, the country is still torn by clashes between armed militias, with the current government failing to restrain them.

Another problem is Libyan fragmentation, with numerous tribes confronting one another. On Saturday several thousand Libyans rallied for autonomy of the east, which has vast oil resources.

1.3.11.Mrs Clinton said Col Gaddafi must go now.without further violence or delay.jpg

Hillary Clinton: 'Libya may become democracy or face civil war'

1 March 2011

Libya could become a peaceful democracy or face years of civil war, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has told Congressional lawmakers.

Mrs Clinton appeared on Capitol Hill to urge Congress not to cut funds needed to deal with crises abroad.

Meanwhile, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates said the US was weighing "a lot of options and contingencies".

The comments came a day after the US began repositioning warships and military aircraft in the Libya region.
'Decision space'

In Washington on Tuesday, senior officials in President Barack Obama's administration maintained pressure on Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi to step down from power.

At the Pentagon, Mr Gates said the US military aimed to give Mr Obama "the broadest possible decision space", while emphasising that no decision on a course of action had been made.

He said 400 US Marines had been deployed to assist in humanitarian and evacuation efforts.

Meanwhile, Mrs Clinton reiterated demands that Col Muammar Gaddafi "must go now, without further violence or delay".

"The entire [Middle East] region is changing, and a strong and strategic American response will be essential," Mrs Clinton said to the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee in prepared testimony.

"In the years ahead, Libya could become a peaceful democracy, or it could face protracted civil war. The stakes are high.

"And this is an unfolding example of how we use the combined assets of diplomacy, development and defence to protect our interests and advance our values."

She added that the US was working to translate the "world's outrage into action and results".

The US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, told reporters in Washington that the US would continue to place pressure on Col Gaddafi until he resigns, while working to stabilise oil prices and avert a possible humanitarian crisis.

"We are going to keep the pressure on Gaddafi until he steps down and allows the people of Libya to express themselves freely and determine their own future," Ms Rice told US media.

China: model of a new type of relations

Chinese-Premier-Wen-Jiaba-Africa.jpgJiefang Daily

November 4, 2012

Should China abandon non-alignment?
Wang Yusheng

The Non-Aligned Movement was born out of the period of the Cold War and U.S.-Soviet striving for hegemony when the most representative alliances were the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Warsaw Treaty Organization, followed by the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty. China has always been an observer and supporter of the Non-Aligned Movement all the way.

After the Cold War, the Warsaw Treaty Organization disintegrated and NATO also lost reason for existing, but the United States and some NATO countries did not abandon the Cold War mentality.

The United States has been pursuing the policy of expanding eastward and westward, pushing the border of NATO to the “doorway” of Russia, and enlarging the influence of the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty to contain China.

Under the circumstances, Chinese experts and scholars think that China is “being beset” and should consider allying to gain initiatives.

The United States is unpopular for its pursuit of alliances, and if China also engages in an alliance to contend with the United States, Japan or NATO, a global destructive “new Cold War” will take shape.

Non-alignment does not mean not deepening cooperation or that China has the same breadth and depth to cooperate with all countries.

Taking the relations between China and the United States as an example, China does not approve of the Group of Two (G2) and advocates the establishment of a new type of relations between great powers and mutual respect for each other’s core interests and major concerns. However, the United States has been hedging its bets on China.

Over the past 10 years, the strategic partnership between China and Russia has actually become the model of the new type of relations between great powers after the Cold War, and both sides oppose alignment and unnecessary confrontation.

Though the members of Shanghai Cooperation Organization advocate non-alignment, non-confrontation and not targeting any third country, they have close cooperation and mutual support on fighting against “terrorism, national secessionism and religious extremism.” Therefore, the answers to questions of what alignment means, who China should ally with and who wants to ally with China are obvious.

U.S. backed terrorists

Some months ago, Obama signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for Syrian terrorists and C.I.A. officers are operating secretly in southern Turkey. The weapons, including automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and some antitank weapons, are being funneled mostly across the Turkish border by way of a shadowy network of intermediaries including Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood and paid for by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The United States is setting up joint military, intelligence and 'medical' working teams with Israel, Turkey and Jordan.

On October 4, 2012, Adm. George Stavridis, the commander of US European Command (USEUCOM) and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), met with Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Ozel in Ankara. The meeting took place at General Staff headquarters but was only announced to the public in a statement released by the General Staff some days later. The talks were closed to the press and the statement did not elaborate on what Stavridis and Ozel discussed. It proved once again that the Turkish government which is not supported by the Turkish population, is not only arming Syrian terrorists but organizes with its NATO allies (and with Israel in the background) also a real war against Syria.

It is typical for the American 'democracy' that on October 14, 2012, the Obama administration announced that it deployed U.S. troops near the Syrian border in neighboring Jordan without ever seeking congressional permission...

Syria News: Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan visits Germany...

warmakers.erdogan.merkel.jpg

Turkey is a historical ally of Germany

Turkey was favoured as a potential ally by Hitler because of its important strategic location on the boundaries of Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as its extensive history as a state hostile against the Russian Empire as well as the later Soviet Union.

To assure that Germany wanted to work with them on a long-range basis, the Turks were guaranteed an equal status in the German-dominated order, and were promised a number of territories which they might desire for reasons of security. These encompassed Edirne (Adrianople) and a rectification of Turkish frontiers at the expense of Greece, the creation of buffer states in the Caucasus under Turkish influence, a rectification of the Turkish-Syrian frontier (the Baghdad Railway and the State of Aleppo) and the Turkish-Iraq frontier (the Mosul region), as well as a settlement of "the Aegean question" to provide Turkey with suitable protection against encroachments from Italy. The Black Sea (which Hitler derided as "a mere frog-pond")was also to be conceded to Turkey as part of its sphere of influence, for this would ne:gate the need of stationing a German navy in the region to replace the Soviet Black Sea Fleet.

In November 2005, an agreement was signed for the sale of 298 German Army Leopard 2A4 tanks to Turkey. Turkey’s tank fleet is currently made up of American M-48s and M-60s, some of which have been modernized with Israeli cooperation into M-60 Sabra tanks, plus a large contingent of German Leopard 1s and Leopard 2s. That is hardy surprising. America and Germany are Turkey’s 2 most important geopolitical relationships, and this is reflected in Turkey’s choice of defense industry partners. The country’s industrial offset requirements ensure that these manufacturers have a long history of local partnerships to draw upon.

On November 1th, 2012, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip and his wife Emine arrived for a celebration to mark 50 years of Turkish immigration to Germany. Germany in the early 1960s, required foreign labour to fill its industrial workforce, and the influx of immigrants from Turkey, Italy, Greece and other south European countries made Germany's economic miracle possible. Today large numbers of Germans with Turkish roots are an integral part of German society.     Erdogan who declared war on Syria while he allows that Turkey is smuggling weapons for bomb attacks in Syria, had a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In a very hypocritical way, Erdogan claimed: 'the terrorism issue was also discussed with Merkel and they have reiterated their support. European Union is absolutely against terrorism however we want to see results of this attitude'.

Germans Protest Upcoming Visit of Turkish Premier over His Government's Human Rights Violation

Oct 31, 2012

BERLIN/ANKARA, (SANA) – Huge crowds gathered in front of Brandenburg Gate in the German Capital of Berlin to protest against the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Germany.

The protesters raised banners that criticize Erdogan's policies which violate human rights.

Earlier in the week, the Turkish security forces suppressed tens of thousands of Turks who joined massive popular protests against the attempts of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government to ban the celebration of the 89th anniversary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic.

The Turkish police clashed with Kurdish protesters on Tuesday near a prison in the city of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey, where inmates are continuing their hunger strike for the 48th day in a row.

The Turkish Anadolu news agency said several thousand people joined the protest marching towards the prison and the police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the protesters who reacted by throwing stones at the police personnel.

Shops were closed and the locals did not send their children to school in line with calls for a boycott.

The Anadolu agency also reported clashes in the city of Istanbul without reports on casualties. A protest also took place in Adana and most of shops closed in Van region.

Hundreds of Kurdish prisoners in dozens of Turkish jails have been on a hunger strike since September demanding increased rights for Kurds and improved conditions for the Kurdish detainees.

Council of the Turkish Peace and Democracy Party discussed the hunger strike issue and decided on many steps and activities in this regard, including declaring October 30 as a 'Resistance Day'.

The Council also decided sending messages to the Kurdish parties and human rights organizations in Europe and the UN and its bodies as well as heads of the European countries, the Turkish embassies, the U.S. Congress members and media channels to urge them to assume responsibility towards the prisoners who are on a hunger strike.

The Council said all organizations of the Peace and Democracy Party in all areas will lay black wreathes in front of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) centers in Turkey and will set up tents and organize oratorical events in solidarity with the hunger strikers.

For its part, the opposition Republican People's Party called on the Turkish public to be on the lookout towards the policy of the ruling AKP party which is trying to hold sway over the judiciary and the higher courts in the country.

Latest News Syria: Nato's game is over

Germany.Lt. General I. Jurgen Bornemann.Military Representative to NATO.Germany) with General W. Schneiderhan.Chief of Defence,Germany..jpgThe geopolitical strategy of Nato seems a copy and an improvement of the plan of Nazi Germany...

From history

The New Order (German: Neuordnung) or the New Order of Europe (German: Neuordnung Europas) was the political order which Nazi Germany wanted to impose on Europe, and eventually the rest of the world. The establishment of the New Order was already begun long before the start of World War II, but was publicly proclaimed by Adolf Hitler in 1941: 'The year 1941 will be, I am convinced, the historical year of a great European New Order'.
---
Nazi Germany’s desire for aggressive territorial expansionism was one of the key triggers that led to the outbreak of World War II.
Historians are still divided as to its ultimate goals, some believing that it was to be limited to Nazi German domination of Europe, while others maintain that it was a springboard for eventual world conquest and the establishment of a world government under German control
---
“The Führer gave expression to his unshakable conviction that the Reich will be the master of all Europe. We shall yet have to engage in many fights, but these will undoubtedly lead to most wonderful victories. From there on the way to world domination is practically certain. Whoever dominates Europe will thereby assume the leadership of the world.”
Joseph Goebbels, 8 May 1943
---
The term Neuordnung originally had a different and more limited meaning than in its present usage. It is typically translated as New Order, but a more correct translation would actually be more akin to re-structurization. When it was used in Germany during the Third Reich-era it referred specifically to the Nazis' desire to essentially redraw the contemporary state borders within Europe, thereby changing the then-existing geopolitical structures.
---
Hitler’s ideas about eastward expansion that he promulgated in Mein Kampf were greatly influenced during his 1924 imprisonment by his contact with his geopolitical mentor Karl Haushofer.[11] One of Haushofer’s primary geopolitical concepts was the necessity for Germany to get control of the Eurasian Heartland in order for Germany to attain eventual world domination.
---
In a subsequently published speech given at Erlangen University in November 1930 Hitler explained to his audience that no other people had more of a right to fight for and attain "control" of the globe (Weltherrschaft, i.e. "world leadership", "world rule") than the Germans. He realized that this extremely ambitious goal could never be achieved without an enormous amount of fighting.[13] Hitler had alluded to future German world dominance even earlier in during his political career. In a letter written by Rudolf Hess to Walter Hewel in 1927, Hess paraphrases Hitler's vision: "World peace is certainly an ideal worth striving for; in Hitler's opinion it will be realizable only when one power, the racially best one, has attained complete and uncontested supremacy. That [power] can then provide a sort of world police, seeing to it at the same time that the most valuable race is guaranteed the necessary living space.
---
Hitler hoped to turn Germany into a total blockade-proof autarky by exploiting the vast resources lying in Soviet territories: the Ukraine was to provide grain, vegetable oil, feeding-stuffs, iron ore, nickel, manganese, coal, molybdenum; the Crimea natural rubber, citrus fruit and cotton; the Black Sea fish and the Caucasus crude oil.
---
The long-term objective as detailed by Hitler in Mein Kampf was the incorporation of large territories in Eastern Europe for German settlement, eventually expanding the territory of the Third Reich all the way to the Ural Mountains. Acquisition of settlement colonies in Eastern Europe would therefore solve the question of lebensraum.
---
Hitler's geopolitical thoughts about Africa always occupied a secondary position to his expansionist aims in Europe itself: "A colonial policy only makes sense if you first control the continent". His public announcements prior to outbreak of the war that Germany's former colonies be returned to it served primarily as bargaining chips to further territorial goals in Europe itself.
---
In 1940, the general staff of the German Navy produced a much more detailed plan accompanied by a map showing a proposed German colonial empire  in sub-Saharan Africa, extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean. The establishment of a vast colonial empire was to serve primarily economic purposes. The area included all pre-WWI German colonial territories in Africa, as well as additional parts of the French, Belgian and British colonial holdings in Africa.
A second part of the plan entailed the construction of a huge string of fortified naval and air bases for future operations against the Western hemisphere spanning much of the Atlantic coastline of Europe and Africa from Trondheim in Norway all the way up to the Belgian Congo, as well as many off-lying islands such as Cape Verde and the Azores. A less extensive but similar initiative was intended for the east coast of Africa.
---
In 1942, a secret diplomatic conference was held between Nazi Germany and the Japanese Empire in which they agreed to divide Asia along a line that followed the Yenisei River to the border of China, and then along the border of China and the Soviet Union, the northern and western borders of Afghanistan, and the border between Iran and India (what is now Pakistan was then part of India).
---
After the projected fall of the USSR, Hitler planned to intensify the war in the Mediterranean. The OKW produced studies concerning an attack against the Suez Canal through Turkey, an offensive towards Baghdad-Basra from the Caucasus (most of which was already under German occupation as a result of Fall Blau) in support of revolting Arab nationalists, and operations in Afghanistan and Iran directed against British India.
---
Turkey was favoured as a potential ally by Hitler because of its important strategic location on the boundaries of Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as its extensive history as a state hostile against the Russian Empire as well as the later Soviet Union.
The Black Sea (which Hitler derided as "a mere frog-pond")was also to be conceded to Turkey as part of its sphere of influence, for this would negate the need of stationing a German navy in the region to replace the Soviet Black Sea Fleet.
---
Allied-occupied Iran was also to be drawn into the Axis camp, possibly by the means of an uprising. The possibility of Iran as an anti-Soviet bastion was already considered in the 1930s, and coincided with Hitler's declaration of Iran as an "Aryan state" (the name Iran literally means "homeland of the Aryans" in Persian). The changing of Persia's name to Iran in 1935 was done by the Shah at the suggestion of the German ambassador to Iran as an act of "Aryan solidarity". On the eve of WWII Germany was already Iran's single-biggest trading partner, followed by the USSR, Britain, and the US.
---
During pre-war diplomatic maneuvers, the NSDAP Foreign Affairs Office took special interest in Afghanistan, believing that the Kaiserreich had failed to exploit the country diplomatically during the First World War despite the Niedermayer-Hentig Expedition. The objective was to ensure that the country would remain neutral during a possible German-British conflict, and even use it militarily against British India or Soviet Russia. Despite the NSDAP Foreign Office's good relations with the Afghan government, the Foreign Ministry under Ribbentrop favored overthrowing the current government and restoration of the rule of Amānullāh Khān, who had been living in exile since 1929.
After the German-French armistice of 1940, the Kabul government tried to question Berlin on German plans concerning the future of Afghanistan. Of special interest were the post-war borders of the country - the Afghan government hoped to see the "liberation" of 15 million ethnic Afghans living in British India, and the securing of the northern Afghan border so that an expansion towards the Indian Ocean became possible.
---
The Third Saudi State under Ibn Saud was seen as a natural ally, and was to be given territorial concessions in south-west Arabia and Transjordan. Also, a post-war satellite Greater Arab Union was discussed.
On February 17, 1945 Hitler explained to his entourage his regrets that Germany's prior alliance with its southern neighbour had prevented her from pursuing a 'more revolutionary' policy towards the Arab world, which would have also allowed its exit from the British and French spheres of influence in the area.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel: 'Security must be assured in future too'

Merkel.2012-05-21-begruessung-nato-gipfe.jpg

On October, 26th 2011, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed the media during a news conference after a meeting at the Chancellery in Berlin, Germany. Rasmussen said the alliance wanted to confirm a decision to end its operations in Libya by Oct. 31.  Rasmussen: 'The U.N.’s resolution adopted earlier in the day reflects that we have fully accomplished our mandate to protect the civilian population of Libya. Even though I do not foresee a major NATO role in Libya in the post-conflict period, if requested the alliance could assist the new Libyan government in the transformation to democracy, particularly in the areas of defense and security sector reforms'.

The secret armies of NATO

American and NATO forces are training Syrian terrorist groups in southeastern Turkish city of Hakkari.

The US is also involved in smuggling arms into Syria from Incirlik military base in Turkey in addition to providing financial support for Syrian terrorist groups.

Through NATO, working with various Western European intelligence agencies, the CIA set up a network of stay behind “secret armies” which were responsible for dozens of terrorist atrocities across Western Europe over decades.

In Turkey in 1960, the stay behind army, working with the army, staged a coup d’état and killed Prime Minister Adnan Menderes; in Algeria in 1961, the French stay-behind army staged a coup with the CIA against the French government of Algiers, which ultimately failed; in 1967, the Greek stay-behind army staged a coup and imposed a military dictatorship; in 1971 in Turkey, after a military coup, the stay-behind army engaged in “domestic terror” and killed hundreds; in 1977 in Spain, the stay behind army carried out a massacre in Madrid; in 1980 in Turkey, the head of the stay behind army staged a coup and took power; in 1985 in Belgium, the stay behind attacked and shot shoppers randomly in supermarkets, killing 28; in Switzerland in 1990, the former head of the Swiss stay behind wrote the US Defense Department he would reveal “the whole truth,” and was found the next day stabbed to death with his own bayonet; and in 1995, England revealed that the MI6 and SAS helped set up stay behind armies across Western Europe.

NATO claims that the idea behind the NATO’s missile defense plans, is to secure Europe from attack by Iran or some other hostile power.  But in reality, through Nato, the US is able to exercise influence over the domestic affairs of other countries and to exercise its imperial power.

War against Syria is part of U.S. bilateral aid to Israel

Obama.AIPAC.jpg

Israel is the largest cumulative recipient of U.S. foreign assistance since World War II.

To date, the United States has provided Israel $115 billion in bilateral assistance.

Almost all U.S. bilateral aid to Israel is in the form of military assistance, although in the past Israel also received significant economic assistance.

Strong congressional support for Israel has resulted in Israel receiving benefits not available to any other countries; for example, Israel can use some U.S. military assistance both for research and development in the United States and for military purchases from Israeli manufacturers.

In addition, all U.S. assistance earmarked for Israel is delivered in the first 30 days of the fiscal year, while most other recipients normally receive aid in installments.

In addition to receiving U.S. State Department-administered foreign assistance, Israel also receives funds from annual defense appropriations bills for joint U.S.-Israeli missile defense programs.

In 2007, the Bush Administration and the Israeli government agreed to a 10-year, $30 billion military aid package.

With more than half of Congress attending, and America's top politicians fumbling to score crowd points with awkwardly delivered Hebrew phrases and fulminations concerning Iran, the reading of the names has become a yearly demonstration of AIPAC's clout. Banquet speakers included Joe Biden, Newt Gingrich, and John Kerry, looming on gigantic screens that lined the hall. AIPAC has 100,000 members, a $60 million budget, and a $140 million endowment. Some 300 staffers, including an army of lobbyists, work out of 18 AIPAC offices spread across the country; they are tight with State Department and Pentagon bureaucrats, and can call on a vast network of political action committees, campaign contributors, and influentials.

'We fired more than a million cluster bombs in Lebanon'

IDF commander: 'We fired more than a million cluster bombs in Lebanon.'

Phosphorous and cluster bombs heavily used; unexploded munitions litter wide area of Lebanon...

Sep.12, 2006

"What we did was insane and monstrous, we covered entire towns in cluster bombs," the head of an IDF rocket unit in Lebanon said regarding the use of cluster bombs and phosphorous shells during the war.

Quoting his battalion commander, the rocket unit head stated that the IDF fired around 1,800 cluster bombs, containing over 1.2 million cluster bomblets.

In addition, soldiers in IDF artillery units testified that the army used phosphorous shells during the war, widely forbidden by international law. According to their claims, the vast majority of said explosive ordinance was fired in the final 10 days of the war.

The rocket unit commander stated that Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) platforms were heavily used in spite of the fact that they were known to be highly inaccurate.

MLRS is a track or tire carried mobile rocket launching platform, capable of firing a very high volume of mostly unguided munitions. The basic rocket fired by the platform is unguided and imprecise, with a range of about 32 kilometers. The rockets are designed to burst into sub-munitions at a planned altitude in order to blanket enemy army and personnel on the ground with smaller explosive rounds.

The use of such weaponry is controversial mainly due to its inaccuracy and ability to wreak great havoc against indeterminate targets over large areas of territory, with a margin of error of as much as 1,200 meters from the intended target to the area hit.

The cluster rounds which don't detonate on impact, believed by the United Nations to be around 40% of those fired by the IDF in Lebanon, remain on the ground as unexploded munitions, effectively littering the landscape with thousands of land mines which will continue to claim victims long after the war has ended.

Because of their high level of failure to detonate, it is believed that there are around 500,000 unexploded munitions on the ground in Lebanon. To date 12 Lebanese civilians have been killed by these mines since the end of the war.

According to the commander, in order to compensate for the inaccuracy of the rockets and the inability to strike individual targets precisely, units would "flood" the battlefield with munitions, accounting for the littered and explosive landscape of post-war Lebanon.

When his reserve duty came to a close, the commander in question sent a letter to Defense Minister Amir Peretz outlining the use of cluster munitions, a letter which has remained unanswered.

'Excessive injury and unnecessary suffering'

It has come to light that IDF soldiers fired phosphorous rounds in order to cause fires in Lebanon. An artillery commander has admitted to seeing trucks loaded with phosphorous rounds on their way to artillery crews in the north of Israel.

A direct hit from a phosphorous shell typically causes severe burns and a slow, painful death.

International law forbids the use of weapons that cause "excessive injury and unnecessary suffering", and many experts are of the opinion that phosphorous rounds fall directly in that category.

The International Red Cross has determined that international law forbids the use of phosphorous and other types of flammable rounds against personnel, both civilian and military.

IDF: No violation of international law

In response, the IDF Spokesman's Office stated that "International law does not include a sweeping prohibition of the use of cluster bombs. The convention on conventional weaponry does not declare a prohibition on [phosphorous weapons], rather, on principles regulating the use of such weapons.

"For understandable operational reasons, the IDF does not respond to [accounts of] details of weaponry in its possession.

"The IDF makes use only of methods and weaponry which are permissible under international law. Artillery fire in general, including MLRS fire, were used in response solely to firing on the state of Israel."

The Defense Minister's office said it had not received messages regarding cluster bomb fire.

British and U.S. colonialism: Suez Canal

gamal-abdul-nasser.jpg

In 1956 the Suez Canal was nationalised by Gamal Abdel Nasser. The Suez Canal Crisis of 1956 effectively ended the political career of Sir Anthony Eden but it served to greatly advance the already very high standing Nasser had in the Arab world. However, what were the causes of the 1956 Suez Canal Crisis?

Britain had ruled Egypt for all of the Twentieth Century. This gave Britain joint control over the Suez Canal – along with the French – which had been described as the “jugular vein of the Empire”. The Suez Canal cut a vast number of miles off a sea journey from Europe to Asian markets and vice-versa and made a journey around the volatile Cape of Good Hope unnecessary. However, the British presence in Egypt was not welcome by many Egyptians as they were made to feel second class citizens in their own country.

The Middle East was a key area within the Cold War context and within the Middle East the Suez Canal was seen as vital. By 1951 the British had 80,000 troops stationed along the Suez Canal making it the largest military base in the world. To many in Britain the Suez Canal was a sign of Britain’s overseas power – to many Egyptians it was an emblem of an empire that harkened back to former times that many believed should have gone when World War Two ended. Egyptians needed permission from the British to even go near to the canal and resistance to the British occupation of Egypt quickly grew.

Colonel Nasser wanted to take advantage of this situation. First he was aware that many Egyptians were deeply unhappy with the British being in Egypt. Second, he was also aware that corruption was rife in senior positions within Egypt and this was most epitomised by the life style of King Farouk. Nasser founded the ‘Free Officers’. Members of it wanted the overthrow of ‘old’ Egypt to be followed by the removal of all British influence in Egypt.

By 1952, attacks on British troops in Egypt got worse. Between 1951 and 1952, thirty had been killed and over sixty had been wounded. The Egyptian police, who were meant to be supporting troops in maintaining law and order, were feeding information to the resistance movement of British troop whereabouts etc. This made life extremely difficult for the British Army in Egypt and in 1952 ‘Operation Eagle’ was introduced. This was a full crackdown on the Egyptian police. However, it only took one incident to spark off a full-scale rebellion and this happened at Ismailia.

The Third Infantry Brigade surrounded the police headquarters at Ismailia and called on the men inside it to surrender. After brief talks, the police within the building refused to do so and made it plain that they were prepared to fight. The British brought in Centurion tanks and other armoured vehicles and attacked. The police headquarters was taken over. There were some British casualties but fifty Egyptian police were killed and many more were wounded. Over 800 men were arrested and taken into custody. A local man photographed what he saw and the photos, when published, only served to inflame an already very tense situation.

What happened at Ismailia angered many throughout the whole of Egypt. The men in the police headquarters were armed with World War Two Lee Enfield rifles while the British used tanks to smash their way into the building. The next day after the British attack, ‘Black Saturday’, there were riots throughout Egypt. The Union Flag was burned and foreign shops were destroyed. In Cairo expatriate accommodation was attacked as was the iconic Shepherd’s Hotel – a base for British expatriates. At the exclusive Turf Club in Cairo, expatriate members were beaten to death and the club was destroyed. In all over 700 buildings were destroyed and 9 British and 26 other Westerners were killed. It is generally accepted that this outbreak of violence was not planned but was a spontaneous outpouring of anger by people who had been treated as second class citizens within their own country. Few Egyptians could afford luxuries that existed at places like the Shepherd’s Hotel or the Turf Club. Those who could were invariably associated with the corrupt government of King Farouk.

Anthony Eden wanted 40,000 troops moved into Egypt within 24 hours to restore order and to protect the British there. The army made it plain to Eden that this was simply not possible from a logistical point of view. While it was a clear sign that Eden had little understanding of issues such as logistics, the issue was left with army chiefs being told that they were leaving British citizens unprotected.

What happened at Ismailia and what followed, gave Nasser and the ‘Free Officers’ exactly the right opportunity to over throw Farouk. The king was peacefully removed from his palace, taken to Alexandria where he boarded his yacht and left Egypt – to a 21-gun salute. Nasser immediately set up the Revolutionary Command Council. Though Nasser did not head the Council, it was obvious that the most potent force in it was Nasser.

This all happened against a background when the British government was having major financial troubles at home. The cost of the military commitment to Egypt was huge – and one that the Treasury could have done without. Eden took the decision to start negotiations with the Revolutionary Command Council to withdraw British troops from the Suez Canal. The so-called ‘Suez Group’ in the Conservative Party was furious when his plan was announced. Led by Julian Amery, the ‘Suez Group’ argued that a withdrawal would be the end of the Empire and that it would reward violence against British troops. Regardless of their objections, Eden went ahead with the negotiations.

However, the speed of the negotiations was not quick enough for Egyptian nationalists. Attacks on British troops continued but a new dynamic was added with attacks on the families of troops occurring. With 27,000 British citizens in Egypt, this was a new and worrying development. The resistance leaders used the talks to their advantage. When the British seemed to be stalling the attacks got worse; when the British appeared to be more conciliatory, they slackened off. In 1954 an agreement was reached that stated that British troops would leave Egypt within twenty months of the signing of the agreement. The signing of this agreement ended the attacks on British troops.

Nasser and Eden met for the first and last time in February 1955. Eden arrived in Cairo with two objectives. The first was for Egypt to stop its anti-British radio broadcasts and the second was to get Egypt to join the recently formed Baghdad Pact – an anti-communist pro-western alliance of Middle East states that Egypt had not joined. He failed on both counts. Even the dinner put on for Nasser at the British Embassy was a failure as Nasser arrived in military uniform to be greeted by Eden in full evening dress – Nasser was unaware that the dinner was to be formal and he concluded that it had been done to show him up in public. There is no evidence that this was the case – it just seems to have been a genuine misunderstanding. But within the context of what was going on then, to those Egyptians who had access to the information via the radio channel ‘Voice of Egypt’, it was a deliberate attempt to humiliate Nasser.

One week after the meeting between Eden and Nasser, Israel raided Egyptian territory in Gaza killing over thirty people. This raid exposed Egypt’s military weakness and Nasser attempted to buy weapons abroad. His attempt to buy weapons from Britain failed and the Americans were also unwilling to accommodate him. Therefore, Egypt turned to the Soviet Bloc. To the Russians, this expansion of influence in the Mediterranean and Middle East was a major coup.

To modernise Egypt, Nasser wanted to build a dam at Aswan to harness the awesome power of the River Nile. Clearly Egypt did not have the money to fund this. $200 million came from the World Bank while, in an effort to re-establish some influence in the area, both Britain and America agreed to financially support the project.

However, Eden did not trust Nasser. In a public broadcast he had stated that Nasser “is not a man to be trusted to keep an agreement.” MI6 provided Eden, now Prime Minister, with reports that Nasser was becoming more pro-Moscow. There was little evidence for this despite the Soviet Union providing Egypt with weapons – both seemed to be using the other for its own purposes. However the MI6 reports only served to anger Eden who did not want to gain an Atlee reputation for appeasement.

When British troops finally left Egypt, it ended seventy four years of occupation. Nasser became president of Egypt and his status in the Arab world could not have been higher. However, without any reference to Britain, America suddenly announced that it was no longer going to financially support the Aswan Dam project. Britain followed the Americans example. Nasser announced that such treatment of Egypt was an “insult” and a “humiliation”. To Nasser the dam would be a symbol of Arab pride and he was determined to go ahead with its building. The Russians provided the necessary engineering knowledge, while the Suez Canal would provide the necessary finance.

In 1956, Nasser announced to his inner council that he was going to nationalise the Suez Canal on behalf of the Egyptian people. In ‘Operation Dignity and Glory’ the offices of the Suez Canal Company were taken over. It was a bloodless affair that was joyously received in Egypt when news of what had occurred was announced. Ironically, government lawyers for the Conservative government 1951-1953 had foreseen this and had assessed whether it was a legal move. They decided that under international law it was legal to nationalise the Suez Canal as long as they suitably compensated share holders and allowed ships of all nationalities through the canal. When Eden was shown the report at his first meeting after ‘Dignity and Glory’, staff there claimed he shouted “This is no f***ing good” and threw the report across the room.

What followed were diplomatic talks - some secret - that all led to the invasion of Port Said in November 1956.

Turkish missiles are designed by Israel

Popey.missile.Israel.jpgPopeye missiles

The Popeye is an air to ground missile developed by Israel.

It is is designed for precision attack against large targets from stand off ranges. The standard Popeye and smaller Popeye-Lite are powered by a single stage solid rocket, a jet engine propels the Popeye Turbo variants.

An inertial guidance system pilots the missile towards the target; for terminal homing the pilot can control the missile directly via an INS and data link, aiming via either a television or imaging infrared seeker depending on the missile model. It is not necessary for the launching aircraft to direct the missile - control can be passed to another platform whilst the firing aircraft escapes the area.

The alleged Israeli submarine launched cruise missile variant is reported to be jet powered and nuclear armed with a greatly increased range.

Israel has exported Popeye and its variants to various friendly countries.

The United States Air Force first bought a batch of 154 missiles in 1989 followed by a second batch of 54 missiles in 1996.

In May 1997, Israel and Turkey signed an agreement valued in excess of US $500 million for the establishment of a joint-venture between Israel's Rafael and Turkey's Turkish Aerospace Industries for the co-production of Popeye I and Popeye II missiles in Turkey.
The Turkish Air Force's F-4 2020 Terminator aircraft and the TuAF F-16 CCIP are armed with a Turkish License production version of the Popeye.

On October 4, 2012, Adm. George Stavridis, the commander of US European Command (USEUCOM) and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), met with Chief of General Staff Gen. The talks were closed to the press and the statement did not elaborate on what Stavridis and Ozel discussed.

Global War on Syria Similar to War on Egypt in 1956

British MP George Galloway.jpgGalloway: Global War on Syria Similar to War on Egypt in 1956… Syrian Leadership Will Not Be Defeated

Oct 30, 2012

BEIRUT, (SANA) – British MP George Galloway affirmed that the global war currently being waged on Syria is similar to the one waged against Egypt in 1956, voicing confidence that Syria will be victorious over this war under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad similar to the victory of the late Jamal Abdelnasser.

During a meeting with former Lebanese President Emil Lahhoud in Beirut on Tuesday, Galloway stressed that the Syrian leadership will not be defeated, underlining the need for the plan launched by former UN Envoy to Syria Kofi Annan to bear fruit and for countries to stop providing military support to the Syrian opposition.

Azerbaijan: Entire Armed Forces Brought Under NATO Standards...

October 30, 2012

The entire staff structure of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces has been brought into conformity with NATO standards, head of the Defense Ministry press service Eldar Sabiroglu told media today.

“Azerbaijani officers in NATO headquarters serve as NATO officers and the number of these officers is growing,” he said.

In 2006, Government of Azerbaijan increased financing of the NATO PFP Programme from 300 000 USD to 850 000 USD. In 2007 this figure was increased to 1.8 million USD. In 2008 it was approximately 2 million USD.

Nato

As part of military preparations for war with the Soviet Union, Nato organised a covert network throughout Western Europe, ostensibly to prepare for armed resistance in the event of a Russian 'invasion'. This "Gladio" network involved sections of the far right in some countries and in the 1960s and 1970s was to become involved in terrorist attacks intended to destabilise politics and society and prevent the left from coming to power. Italy was the country where the Gladio network came closest to the surface.

The threat posed by democracy was dealt with most dramatically in Greece in April 1967. The army seized power to prevent politics moving to the left, installing a military junta in power that ruled by force and the free use of torture. The Greek colonels had the support of Nato until they were overthrown in 1974.

Through Nato, the US is able to exercise influence over the domestic affairs of other countries and to exercise its imperial power.

Obama's Nobel Peace Prize: military intervention in Mali

Kenyan communities in Dadaab.dramatic.refugee.situation..jpg

Oct 29, 2012

France and the United States have put more pressure on Algeria to support a military intervention in crisis-hit African country of Mali.

"An intervention in northern Mali is possible without the military backing of Algeria but not without its green light," said the head of the Centre of African Studies, a French think-tank, Pierre Boilley on Sunday.

The military officials of the US and France reportedly held a secret meeting in Paris earlier this month in a bid to draw a plan for military action in Mali to help the Bamako government fight the so-called al-Qaeda-affiliated radicals in the country’s north.

France, the former colonial master of Algeria and Mali, discussed the crisis that has split Mali in two since March during a visit by Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius in July.

American Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last week that the Pentagon is working with allies on a plan to deal with 'al-Qaida-linked militants in Mali and elsewhere in the North Africa region', with American assistance likely to center on intelligence and logistical support.

Since 2007, the U.S. has spent more than $550 million to help train and supply an African proxy force of about 18,000 soldiers in Somalia.

Many Western powers fear the Sahara desert nation could become like Afghanistan and, like everywhere, they invest on the first place in military interventions.

Currently the Horn of Africa is experiencing the highest rate of malnutrition. Some 30 per cent of children are suffering from Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM).

'Iraq urges end to Turkey PKK attacks'

Iraq has called for an end to the presence of Turkish military forces on its land, demanding that Turkey stop its attacks on members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in northern Iraq.

“The cabinet decided to reject the presence of any foreign bases or forces on Iraqi land and to reject the entry of any foreign military forces into Iraqi land,” said Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Dabbagh reiterated that the Turkish military action against the PKK members on Iraqi land “contradicts the principles of good neighborly relations.”

The Iraqi cabinet “recommends that parliament cancel or not extend any treaty signed in the past with any foreign state that allows the presence of foreign forces and military bases on Iraqi land or the entry of these forces,” the Iraqi government spokesman stated.

The remarks were made in response to a request by the Turkish government on Monday from its parliament to renew a mandate, expiring on October 17, that allows Turkish military strikes against the PKK in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of Iraq.

The treaty in question was signed by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in 1995, allowing Turkish forces to have presence in the northern regions of Iraq to target the Kurdish group.

The military presence of Turkish forces and their crossing into Iraq “is a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and security,” Dabbagh added.

Some analysts believe that Baghdad’s decision may be a reaction to Turkey’s refusal to extradite fugitive Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, who has been sentenced to death in absentia by an Iraqi court for running terror squads in Iraq.

Over the past months, Turkish military forces and the PKK have been involved in one of their heaviest clashes since the beginning of the Kurdish group’s armed opposition against Ankara.

In July, Baghdad warned Ankara against the “violation” of its territory and airspace by Turkish fighter jets and called on its foreign ministry to file a complaint with the UN Security Council over the issue.

Turkey is one of five European nations that continue to house U.S. tactical nuclear weapons allocated for NATO.

It proved once again that the Turkish government is not only arming Syrian terrorists but organizes with its NATO allies (with Israel in the background) also a real war against Syria.

Israeli-Turkish ties have deteriorated over Israel's refusal to apologize for the deaths of nine Turkish activists in a raid on a Gaza-bound aid ship last year, but according to US officials, Hillary Clinton urged Turkey to “keep the door open” to better ties with Israel.

It is important to know that in May 1997, Israel and Turkey signed an agreement valued in excess of US $500 million for the establishment of a joint-venture between Israel's Rafael and Turkey's Turkish Aerospace Industries for the co-production of Popeye I and Popeye II missiles in Turkey.
The Popeye is an air to ground missile developed and in use by Israel, of which several types have been developed for Israeli and export users. A substantially modified long-range cruise missile variant of the Popeye Turbo has been speculated as being employed in Israel's submarine-based nuclear forces.
Israel has exported Popeye and its variants to various friendly countries:
Australia: Royal Australian Air Force
India: Indian Air Force
South Korea: Republic of Korea Air Force
Turkey: Turkish Air Force

'US envoy reveals secret assistance offer to Turkey in PKK fight'

The US ambassador to Turkey has revealed that Washington secretly offered Ankara to have an “anti-bin Laden” type of joint operation against a number of military leaders of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)...

On Tuesday, Francis Ricciardone revealed to Turkish journalists that the US had offered Turkey its military technology to hunt down the PKK leaders.

However, the Turkish government turned down the offer, saying it would continue battling with the PKK “on the basis of its laws and experiences.”

The PKK has been fighting for an autonomous Kurdish region inside Turkey since the 1980s.

Ankara has carried out several military operations against the PKK in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan also confirmed on October 16 that he had rejected the offer on a rather technical basis.

Erdogan recalled the US operation near the Pakistani capital Islamabad in May 2011 that led to the death of Osama bin Laden.

“Bin Laden was caught in a house,” said the Turkish premier, adding, “But the struggle here is in mountainous geography.”

This is reportedly the second disclosed secret offer of assistance by the US.

War between Turkey and Syria

Erdogan.petit.caniche.de.Hillary.Clinton.jpgISTANBUL, Oct. 9 2012 (Xinhua) - Turkey and Syria move closer than ever to the verge of war after Syria's latest mortar shelling killed five Turkish civilians.

The Turkey Parliament has authorized a war mandate last week, enabling further cross-border military action against Syria.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan talked about the war twice within a week, saying that Turkey was not far away from war and called on his people to be prepared.

Turkey and Syria have been exchanging cross-border artillery fire for almost a week. In this sense, Turkey has already started fighting.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last Saturday that conflict between Turkey and Syria may escalate and spread to neighboring countries.

However, many Turkish analysts worry that it would be great mistake for Turkey to get involved in a war with Syria, which could bring serious consequences to this country.

"If Turkey starts war with Syria, it would be detrimental for both countries. Turkey's social stability, economic development and democratization process would all be badly affected," Aykan Erdemir, a Turkish MP from the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), told Xinhua.

On June 29, 2011, an American study has revealed that the cost of U.S. military action in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan will run to at least $3.7trillion.
In human terms, at least 224,000 to 258,000 people have died directly from American warfare. Many more have died indirectly, from the loss of clean drinking water, health care and nutrition. Another 365,000 have been wounded and at least 7.8 million have been displaced.

Washington supports terrorists inside and outside Syria

barack-obama-and-ban-ki-moon.jpgOctober 29, 2012 - In two identical letters directed to the Chairman of the UN Security Council and UN Secretary General, the Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said on Monday stressed that the failure of the UN Security Council to condemn the bombing which took place in Daf al-Shouk neighborhood has encouraged terrorists to continue committing crimes against the Syrian people.

In the two letters which the Ministry demanded by issued as official Security Council and UN General Assembly documents under counter-terrorism articles, the Ministry said that on Monday October 29, 2012, a car bomb explosion shook a neighborhood in the town of Jarmana south of Damascus, resulting in the death of 11 citizens and injuring over 20, in addition to causing grave material damage to building to surrounding buildings and shops.

The letters said that this bombing took place in a town where Syrian Muslims and Christians of various sects coexist, and that it is one of the devastating bombings that took place in Syria during Eid al-Adha holiday, noting that the Syrian government announced its commitment to the cessation of military operations during this holiday, pointing out that the failure of the UN Security Council to condemn the bombing which took place in Daf al-Shouk neighborhood has encouraged terrorists to continue committing crimes against the Syrian people.

The Foreign and Expatriates Ministry went on to say that the US and some European and western countries disrupted the issuing Security Council statements that condemn the bloody terrorism claiming dozens of lives of women, children and the elderly in Syria, with the last such incident being when the UK, a permanent UNSC member, objected to issuing a statement condemning the bombing carried out by terrorist elements in Daf al-Shouk, a neighborhood in Damascus, which claimed the lives of many martyrs and wounded many others, in addition to destroying tens of houses.

The Ministry said that the disruption of such procedures by countries that claim to combat international  terrorism cannot be interpreted as anything other than practical support for terrorism and terrorists, noting that the US, France, Germany and Britain take turns among themselves to disrupt these procedures every time terrorists commit their crimes in Syria under blatant excuses and allegations that clearly indicate the existence of an agenda targeting the Syrian people, their achievements and their civilization, as well as constituting blatant proof of detestable double standards.

Social network of the richest of the earth: a group of the wealthiest Americans including Obama and the 26-year-old Zuckerberg, who is worth an estimated 13,5 billion dollars...

----

'President Obama made his 2012 campaign pitch at Facebook headquarters on Wednesday in the first ever live "town hall" meeting broadcast over the social network'

In an attempt to re-ignite the youth energy of his 2008 campaign, President Obama launched the first ever live town-hall-style meeting at Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California, on Wednesday.

Broadcast live to the social network’s more than 500 million users, the Q&A session included questions from the live audience as well as those submitted through the event’s Facebook page. Questions were moderated by Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who joined the president on stage wearing uncharacteristically dressy attire.

“Thank you so much, Facebook, for hosting, first of all, ” said Obama as he introduced himself to the crowd. “My name is Barack Obama, and I’m the first guy to get Mark Zuckerberg to wear a jacket and tie.”

During the meeting, President Obama touched on a wide variety of issues sure to play a major role throughout the 2012 campaign, including the ballooning national debt, the federal budget, health care, and the housing market.

While detailing his plan to reduce the deficit, which is expected to hit $1.4 trillion this fiscal year, the president promoted his strategy of spending cuts and increased taxes on the wealthiest Americans, a group that includes both the president himself and 26-year-old Zuckerberg, who is worth an estimated 13,5 billion dollars.

“I’m cool with that,” said Zuckerberg in response to the plan.

Zuckerberg, who recently donated $100 million to the Newark, New Jersey, school system, praised Obama’s education reform efforts. “I think the Race to the Top stuff that you guys have done is one of the most under-appreciated and most important things that your administration has done,” Zuckerberg said.

Obama turned the conversation to the importance of quality math and science education, a topic popular with the Silicon Valley crowd.

“I always hear stories about how we can’t find engineers, and that’s why we’re emphasizing math and science … We want to start making Science cool,” Obama said. “I want people to feel about the next big energy breakthrough and the next big Internet breakthrough the same way they felt about the moonwalk.”

“We’ve got to lift our game up when it comes to science, math and technology,” Obama continued. “That’s hopefully greatest legacy I can have as President of the United States.”

The president also backed the idea that America allow highly skilled immigrants to contribute to America’s technology industry.

“If we’ve got smart people who want to come here and start businesses and are PhDs in math and science and computer science, why don’t we want them to stay? They are job generators,” Obama said to a round of applause. “I think about somebody like an Andy Grove of Intel,” the president continued. “We want more Andy Groves here in the United States. We don’t want them starting companies — we don’t want them starting Intel in China or starting it in France. We want them starting it here.”

To conclude, Obama made his plea to the young crowd that made up the audience, both at Facebook headquarters, and those watching at home, to stay engaged in the politics of the country.

“If you put the same energy and imagination that you put into Facebook into the political process, I guarantee you there’s nothing we can’t solve,” Obama said.

At the end of the event, Zuckerberg made his own stylistic contribution as he presented President Obama with his signature duds, a Facebook hoodie.

Facebook - Reuters: misleading information from Israel

IDFbahrain.Israel.misleads.jpeg

On October 17, the Israeli military posted the above infographic on its Facebook page. The image includes a photograph of a young masked man holding a firebomb and featuring statistics regarding the number of firebomb attacks against Israelis in the West Bank since the start of 2012. The Israeli military urges Facebook users to share the image “because the mainstream media will not.”

In fact, the mainstream media did share this photo extensively – in its coverage of protests in Bahrain.

This powerful image has nothing to do with Judea, Samaria, Palestinians or Israelis. It was shot by Reuters photographer Hamad I Mohammed during protests in the Bahraini village of Salmabad last April.

bahrain-reuters.facebook.misleading.png

The Israeli military’s decision to use foreign photos to illustrate attacks in the West Bank as part of its propaganda efforts (without indicating that the image is only an illustration) may raise some interesting questions about its own ethical perception and standards.

This is not the first time the army has faced this particular criticism. In June, the army marked gay pride month by posting a photograph of two male Israeli soldiers holding hands. It was later revealed that the two soldiers are not a couple and only one of them is gay.

The use of a photo unrelated to the incident it purports to be illustrating was also more striking given the recent Israeli reaction to another alleged misuse of photographs.

Last March, Israeli military and political figures demanded the United Nation’s OCHA office in Jerusalem fire a staff member after she tweeted a photograph of a fatally wounded girl, whom she indicated had just been killed by Israeli fire in Gaza.

Pro-Israel activists and government officials maintained that the photograph had been published by Reuters in 2006 and a veritable campaign was launched besmirching the OCHA employee. Beyond the hypocrisy inherent in doing something that you had only just condemned others for doing, we should remember a key distinction between the two incidents: While the OCHA employee published the concerned photograph on her private Twitter account, as a private citizen, the Israel Defense Force is an official body and its Facebook page is an official government channel.

There are two options here: 1) The Israeli military did not know the source of the Bahraini image and did not bother to investigate before choosing to use the image (an “investigation” that took me only five minutes); 2) The military was aware of the photograph’s origin and chose to use it anyway in a misleading manner.

The IDF Spokespersons’ new media section has been contacted for comment. This post will be updated should a response be received.

American 'Peace Process' killed 2,300 Palestinians

Israeli settlers from Bracha settlement throw stones at Palestinian farmers.jpg

Maan News Agency | June 15, 2012

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces have killed nearly 2,300 Palestinians and injured 7,700 in Gaza over the last five years, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said Thursday.

Some 27 percent of the fatalities in Gaza were women and children, the UN agency said in a report highlighting the effects of Israel’s blockade.

The land, sea and air blockade of Gaza entered its sixth year on Thursday.

Under the blockade, exports have dropped to less than 3 percent of 2006 levels.

“The continued ban on the transfer of goods from Gaza to its traditional markets in the West Bank and Israel, along with the severe restrictions on access to agricultural land and fishing waters, prevents sustainable growth and perpetuates the high levels of unemployment,
food insecurity and aid dependency,” UNOCHA said.

Israel’s naval blockade has undermined the livelihood of 35,000 fishermen, and farmers have lost around 75,000 tons of produce each year due to Israeli restrictions along Gaza’s land border, it added.

Meanwhile, Israeli restrictions on imports have led to the growth of the smuggling trade. At least 172 Palestinians have been killed working in tunnels under Gaza’s border with Egypt, the report said.

Despite the risks, young men are still drawn to tunnel work in Gaza, where more than half the youth is unemployed and 44 percent of people are food insecure.

Mark Regev, spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said Thursday that the blockade was necessary because Gaza’s ruling party Hamas is a “terrorist organization.”

“All cargo going into Gaza must be checked because Gaza is controlled by Hamas, an internationally recognized terrorist organization,” Regev told Reuters in response to a petition by 50 aid groups, including six UN agencies, calling on Israel to lift the blockade.

meeting with.UN envoy to Syria.jpgPresident al-Assad: Any Initiative or Political Process Should Be Essentially Based on Principle of Halting Terrorism

Oct 22, 2012

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday stressed that Syria supports the efforts of the UN envoy to Syria and is open to any sincere efforts seeking to find a political solution to the crisis based on respecting Syria's sovereignty and rejecting any foreign interference.

The President's stress came during his meeting with the UN envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, which tackled the developments in Syria and the efforts exerted by Brahimi and the outcomes of his latest tour to a number of countries in the region.

President al-Assad clarified that any initiative or political process should be essentially based on the principle of halting terrorism and what is required in this regard from the countries involved in supporting, arming and harboring the terrorists in Syria to halt such acts.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem, Presidential Political and Media Advisor, Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban, Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Fayssal Mikdad, Assistant Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Ahmad Arnous, and Head of Foreign Media Department at the Ministry, Jihad Makdissi.

Brahimi: Meeting Was Open and Responsible as Usual

Later, in a statement to the journalists following his meeting with President al-Assad, Brahimi described the meeting as "open and responsible as usual".

He said the meeting tackled the issues related to the Syrian situation "with us looking forward to the future which we hope will end up in solving the crisis in Syria and restoring peace and security to it."

"I talked with President al-Assad about halting the fighting during the Eid, and I also talked with all those whom I met inside and outside Syria about this personal initiative which isn't an advanced project or part of the peace process which we seek for this country," the UN envoy told the journalists.

Brahimi: My Only Agenda Is Serving the Syrians

He considered that "if each of the parties would take a decision on its own, then there would be a collective decision on the non-use of arms during the Eid."

Brahimi noted that this idea of his had the support of the opposition parties abroad and the officials in the neighboring countries whom he met.

He said that being in charge, he hasn't got any other agenda except that of serving the Syrian people, wishing them a blessed Eid.

"I'll come back after the Eid. If there was calm during it, we would build on it, and even it there wasn't, we would work to realize calm," Brahimi pointed out, expressing hope that the door to ease for the Syrian people will open.

Answering a question regarding him having a long-winded plan or a ready paper, Brahimi said "We are working on getting this paper prepared with the various internal and external parties."

He added that the Syrian people expects something more than this days-long armistice and they have the right to this, noting that "What we can promise to do is to work tirelessly to achieve the aspirations of the Syrian people."

Asked on whether he had guarantees from the armed groups on commitment to halt fighting, the UN envoy said "this call doesn't require prearranged guarantees as guarantees are promises by the people to halt the fighting. Therefore, they either commit themselves and their conscience to do so, or otherwise if they didn't, then it is the Syrian people who would hold them accountable."
