Syria: Grand Mufti of the Republic, Dr. Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun

Syria.Grand Mufti .Lebanon.jpg

Hassoun: Situation in Syria External War Aimed at Undermining Resistance

Beirut, May 16, 2013

Grand Mufti of the Republic, Dr. Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun said that the situation in Syria is an external war aimed at undermining the culture of resistance, unity and coexistence that Syria prides itself on.

Speaking at a meeting of the good offices committee emanating from the 26th International Islamic Conference in Beirut on Thursday, Hassoun said ''It is a war waged against Syria which embraced the culture of resistance and steadfastness more than twenty five years ago…when it stood alone to back the Islamic revolution in Iran, and was punished by Arabs for that.''

He added that Syria ''has been facing confessional instigation and sedition for two years,''' calling for dialogue as ''Syria's doors are open to all.''

The Mufti said that scores of TV channels in the Arab and Muslim world are politicized that ''assume the mantle of religions and sects, and instigate chaos.''

Mufti Hassoun pointed out to a ''multitude of Muslim scholras' unions,'' describing it as a dangerous phenomenon. He called for cooperation among the unions and that the good offices committee brings the leaders of unions and Muslim scholars together.

Hassoun said that ''thirty years ago, there were up to 10 thousand mosques in Syria, and the number today is around 18 thousand and 130 Sharia schools. Nonetheless, some claim that Syria is a country that fights Islam.''

He added that the enemies of the Muslim nation have attempted to stir up sedition using religion to that end, adding that ''It all started when Iran came up with the idea of national unity and al-Quds week, which proved beneficial to the nation and dangerous to the enemies.''

''Lebanon was a model that they sought to tear apart and disintegrate, which the Lebanese people, army and resistance wouldn't approve of, ''Hassoun said, adding''and Lebanon managed to stand in the face of the mightiest power on earth, and restored its stature that is the envy of Arabs.''

He considered that the role of clergymen is to call for dialogue, calling for holding the forthcoming conference in Damascus.

Jeruzalem Post: 'Turkey used chemical weapons'

Chemical.weapons.Turkey used chemical weapons against Kurds.jpg

'Turks hit PKK with chemical weapons'

By BENJAMIN WEINTHAL,  JERUSALEM POST CORRESPONDENT,

LAST UPDATED: 8/12/2010

Report: German newspaper says photos of dead Kurds confirm use.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan moved Photo: Associated Press BERLIN – German politicians called on Thursday for an international investigation into the reported use of chemical weapons by the Turkish military. The weapons were used against members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), according to the online edition of the German weekly magazine Der Spiegel.

“Turkey needs to urgently look into these accusations,” said Ruprecht Polenz, chairman of the Foreign Affairs committee in the Bundestag and a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union party.

Polenz recommended an international investigation to examine the deaths of eight Kurdish activists from the PKK. Claudia Roth, co-chair of the German Green party, echoed Polenz’s criticisms, seconding his call for an investigation.

MP Andrej Hunko urged the German Foreign Ministry to file a complaint against Turkey with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague.

A forensic report from Hamburg University Hospital confirmed that the eight Kurds had been murdered by “the use of chemical substances.”

Turkish Kurdish human rights members delivered photos in March to a delegation of German politicians, Turkey specialists, and journalists. The bodies in the photos were severely deformed and torn to pieces; the photos formed the basis for the forensic report. Hans Baumann, a German expert on the authenticity of photos, confirmed that photos had not been doctored.

The eight Kurdish PKK members were killed last September. The 31 photos, according to German media, are so disturbing that news organizations have been reluctant to publish them. The murdered PKK rebels – two women and six men – range in age from 19 to 33.

The allegation of employing chemical weapons against the Kurdish minority group could further taint Turkey’s battered human rights record.

Turkey’s nearly 12 million Kurds are seeking increased rights and autonomy. Turkey’s armed forces have, according to human rights groups, brutally suppressed the Kurdish ethnic minority’s attempts to secure more independence in the southeast. In July, a series of violent clashes between the Turkish military and Kurdish rebels broke out. The PKK had previously attacked a Turkish military post, killing eight Turkish soldiers, prompting a wave of military strikes resulting in the deaths of 12 Kurds.

Turkey is a signatory to the Chemical Weapons Convention. The alleged use of chemical weapons would constitute a violation of the anti-chemical weapons treaty.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry denied engaging in chemical and biological warfare, according to a report in the daily Tageszeitung. The paper noted that German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle had been informed of the chemical weapons allegations before his trip to Turkey in late July, but has declined to take diplomatic action.

Chemical weapons used in Syria, says Turkey

chemical.weapons.white_phosphorusbone.jpg

Turkish media reports that recently (2011) in fact the Turkish army used Napalm or most of all phosphor related substances in their fight against the PKK guerilla. In other words so called thermal weapons which are not banned by any international treaty (unless you target civilians) – even if they are really inhuman.

To clear up the confusion about thermal bombs and banned chemical weapons read our Document about “The Turkish army and their  use of Chemical weapons”.

Christopher Milroy, a professor of forensic pathology in the UK, went to the Kurdish region of Turkey in the early nineties to investigate use of chemical weapons. Here is an excerpt from an article he published, A secret and dirty war, in the British Medical Journal from July 1994:

The Turkish authorities refused permission to examine the area where the alleged use of napalm took place. The area had been sealed off and the bodies of the victims had been buried in a mass grave, which had subsequently been concreted over. Nevertheless, a few relatives had been able to identify the victims from clothing or distinct features and removed the bodies for proper Islamic burial. All the bodies were described as severely burnt, without bullet wounds. We believed that the examination of the bodies would probably be obstructed, but hoped to interview relatives to obtain descriptions of the injuries. In Ankara we met human rights workers and then travelled to Kurdistan. We had already been told that arrest warrants had been issued against doctors, lawyers, and other human rights workers who had intended to accompany us.

After a couple paragraphs describing how he and his team were harassed by police and security forces, Milroy continues with his accounts of interviews with family members.

The next day we drove to Adiyaman, where we interviewed another relative of one of the victims. His description was again of bodies so charred that there were no recognisable features to permit a visual identification. No bullet wounds were present. While we were talking to him we were told that a man who was going to try and collect samples from the bodies in a local village had been arrested by the Turkish authorities, along with his entire family. The last information I received was that they were still in prison.

Because of the harassment we were unable to conduct the examinations, though the descriptions given were consistent with the use of napalm. A case has been presented before the European Commission of Human Rights.

Based on Milroy’s description and what little information was published in the Spiegel Online’s article, one can assume that either napalm or white phosphorous were used. Both agents cause severe burning, often to the bone.

In 1999 a ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen, a German public-service television station) television report alleged chemical weapons use against the PKK, citing an unnamed member of a Turkish military special unit. ZDF said that in May of that year, a Turkish source told them he had taken part in operations against the PKK in which an unidentified chemical weapon had been used against insurgents hiding in caves.

‘Everyone in there was gassed—it was absolutely certain that nobody survived,’ said the Turkish military source as quoted by ZDF. Amnesty International, which was called in by ZDF to evaluate the military source, described him as ‘all-around credible.’

German Defence Ministry spokesperson at the time, Dieter Puhl, called the report ‘totally false and misleading.’ It is important to note that during that time period, the German government was supplying Turkey with chemical weapons test laboratories. The Defence Ministry said the labs would serve only to ‘protect soldiers and the civilian population.’

In October 1999, Turkish Foreign Ministry deputy spokesperson, Sermet Atacanli, referring to the ZDF programme, said that ‘Turkey assumed the obligation not to develop, produce, store, or use chemical weapons, and meticulously abides by the relevant agreement.’

In August of 2000, Turkish military forces entered what was then called the ‘Northern NFZ’. The northern no-fly zone extended up from the 36th parallel and formed what was supposed to be a protected zone for the Kurdish population there. In the course of the air raids on 15 and 17 August chemical weapons and napalm were allegedly used. Ankara’s official line was that the raids were directed exclusively at PKK targets. Regardless of the official line, many civilians, including women and children, were killed.

Turkish helicopter bombardment

This was an area designated for the ‘protection of the Kurdish civilian population in the north of Iraq.’ Yet the US Embassy in Ankara did not condemn the attack. A spokesperson said: ‘There is information in the reports concerning the use of chemical weapons. But I will not appraise the incident or give detailed information.’ The information he did give was: ‘The US in general defends the rights of the Turkish government against PKK terrorists in northern Iraq.’ How can you defend the use of chemical weapons?

In 2006 14 members of the PKK were killed in a large-scale offensive by the Turkish army after Newroz. Chemical weapons use was suspected in the operation. Subsequently, protests erupted following the funeral for the 14 PKK members. Days of violence ensued in Diyarbakir and nearby cities and towns.

In August 2007 the DTP reported that chemical weapons were used against a group of 11 PKK fighters in ?irnex.

In December 2007 the Turkish Armed Forces bombarded an area in the Qandil mountains. Shortly thereafter almost 200 goats died after grazing in the area where the bombardment took place. A detailed lab analysis of the goat milk detected poison.

A March 2008 report in the Kurdish Globe again mentions chemical weapons use in the Qandil mountain area. Several PKK fighters were seriously wounded by ‘weapons mixed with chemicals; blood flowed from their ears, eyes, and noses.’ These symptoms are not indicative of the napalm or WP that was most likely used in other attacks, but were nonetheless a direct result of illegal toxins used by the Turkish military.

Preliminary examinations by the Kurdistan Ministry of the Environment showed that Turkey used banned weapons. A delegation from Iraq’s council of representatives also declared that Turkish troops had used chemical weapons.

The Kurdistan Ministry of Health organised a medical team to investigate the affected locations and victims’ health. Some affected families were taken to Hewlêr for further medical testing.

One important question is whether or not there is an official sanction by the Turkish government to use chemical and/or biological weapons in its counter-terrorism efforts.

On 23 July 1989, the Turkish newspaper ?kibine Do?ru published an article on chemical weapons use. The article spoke of a secret security directive by the Turkish Armed Forces permitting the use of such agents as part of the government effort to combat Kurdish fighters.

According to the directive, which was issued on 25 February 1986 and signed by Necdet Öztorun, who was at the time commander of the Turkish Army, various methods were deemed permissible to destroy tunnels, including: filling the tunnels with poison gas, and rendering them unusable by introducing a specially bred poisonous insects.

In another section of the directive, it makes mention of the permitted use of gas bombs and NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) weapons, such as fire making substances, and tear and emetic gas.

The Turkish government did not explicitly deny the existence of the directive, however, questions remain as to its authenticity.

Regardless of whether or not the directive is authentic, there is overwhelming evidence (though some will insist that it is only circumstantial) that the Turkish government and its armed forces routinely use chemical weapons against the PKK and Kurdish civilians. They have been doing it for decades and will continue to do so with impunity.  The above examples are only a partial account of what has been happening. So why is no one mounting a full-scale investigation of these atrocities? Perhaps the Spiegel Online story will spark some response. It is doubtful however that it will come from the Europeans or the Americans.

Does no one care that a member of NATO, a country that is seeking admission to the EU, is flagrantly violating international law within its borders and beyond? With chemical weapons! Has the ‘global war on terror’ become no more than a licence to kill for governments in Washington’s exclusive terror club? Apparently, and sadly, so.

Latest News: Turkey used chemical weapons against Kurds

Image

13 August 2010

According to a report that was published on Thursday in the German magazine Der Spiegel, German experts have confirmed the authenticity of photographs that show that PKK fighters in Turkey were killed by chemical weapons.

The photographs in question were given in March by activists to a German human rights delegation, comprised of experts, journalists and politicians from Turkey’s Left Party. The photos feature burned, maimed and scorched body parts, so much so that he victims are scarcely even recognizable as human beings. Hans Baumann, a German expert on photo forgeries has confirmed the authenticity of the photos, which according to Turkish-Kurdish human rights activists show eight members of the Kurdistan Workers´ Party (PKK) underground movement, considered a terrorist movement by the UN, EU and NATO. They are believed to have been killed in September 2009.

A forensics report released by the Hamburg University Hospital has said that it is highly probable that the eight Kurds died „due to the use of chemical substances.“

Turkey has long been suspected of using chemical weapons against Kurdish rebels, and the evidence puts increasing pressure on the Turkish government to come up with answers. German politicians and human rights experts are now demanding an investigation into the incident.

Claudia Roth, co-chair of Germany´s Green Party, told Der Spiegel: „The latest findings are so spectacular that the Turkish side urgently needs to explain things. It is impossible to understand why an autopsy of the PKK fighters was ordered but the results kept under seal.“

Roth also demanded that Turkey issue an official statement on the possible use of chemical weapons.

Die Tageszeitung, a daily newspaper in Berlin, reported on Thursday that the Turkish Foreign Ministry has rejected the accusations. The Ministry said that Turkey is a signatory to the Chemical Weapons Convention, and as such its armed forces do not possess any biological or chemical weapons.

The newspaper also reported that it has obtained additional pictures from the autopsies of six other killed Kurds. These images have also been submitted to the experts for examination.

Human rights activists in Turkey have also demanded an investigation, but the Turkish army has refused to comment.

Recently, there has been an increase in acts of PKK rebels against Turkish military targets. A PKK rocket killed six Turkish soldiers in the Mediterranean port at the end of May. At the end of June, Turkish security forces shot dead two villagers gathering herbs in northern Kurdistan after mistaking them for Kurdish resistance fighters.

In response, the Kurds attacked foreign military positions in the portions of what they consider their homeland occupied by Turkey and on a bus carrying military personnel in Istanbul. The Kurds believe that their country should include the adjoining parts of Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria that have large Kurdish populations and that once also had a Jewish community. The Kurdish Jews emigrated to Israel in the early days of the Jewish state.

Since 1984, more than 45,000 people, mostly Kurds, have been killed in the conflict to achieve goals that were defined as self determination, independence and later as, cultural recognition. The United States recently announced that it sides with Turkey in the conflict and regards the PKK as a terrorist group. Ambassador James Jeffrey said in a statement at the end of June: „We stand ready to review urgently any new requests from the Turkish military or government regarding the PKK. The PKK is a common enemy of both Turkey and the U.S. and we actively support the efforts of our Turkish allies to defeat this terrorist threat.”

The US' turnaround and the Israeli attack, which has been in the works since Obama’s visit to Israel last month, according to Ben Caspit, follow a US intelligence assessment made public on April 25, based on evidence from Great Britain, France and Israel, and made by US intelligence agencies with “varying degrees of confidence” of “small scale” chemical weapons use, based upon “physiological samples” where “the chain of custody is not clear.”
There were also four key events which took place on April 30: the meeting of the Arab League delegation with US Secretary of State John Kerry about a revived Arab Peace Initiative, a fiery speech by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, an Israeli attack on Gaza and Iran’s statement that chemical weapons use is a red line in Syria.
As the United States and United Nations proceed with their investigations into the allegations of chemical weapons use, Washington, its Arab allies and Israel are now looking to increase military pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, so that Assad will agree to a political solution that includes his stepping aside. Syria is no longer just a battle of “the opposition” against the “Assad regime.” Those days are long gone. Syria is now a full scale Middle East War, with sectarian overtones and direct Israeli engagement, with the United States and Israel taking the side of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey (read Sunni) to topple Assad, and break or set back the Iran-Syria-Hezbollah (read Shiite) axis.
(Iran has consistently opposed the use of weapons of mass destruction, as well as chemical weapons by any country, and has sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in this respect.)  http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2013/05/us-israel-syria-war-escalate-hezbollah.html

Turkey: 'Red line' for unproved use of chemical weapons + blaming Syria's intelligence service for two car bombings that killed at least 46 people

May 9, 2013

'Turkey would support U.S.-led no-fly zone in Syria: NBC'

Washington — Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey would support a U.S.-enforced no-fly zone in Syria and warned that Damascus crossed President Barack Obama's “red line'' on chemical weapons use long ago, according to an NBC News interview released Thursday.
A no-fly zone to prohibit Syrian military aircraft from hitting rebel targets has been mentioned by American lawmakers as one option the United States could use to put pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
“Right from the beginning ... we would say 'Yes,'' Erdogan said when asked if Turkey, a NATO member that shares its longest border with Syria, would support such action, according to an NBC.com report.

'Turkey Blames Syria for Deadly Car Bombs'

Turkey — Turkey on Sunday blamed groups connected to Syria's intelligence service for two car bombings that killed at least 46 people in a Turkish border town a day earlier.
Turkish officials said Sunday that security services had arrested nine people, all Turkish citizens, including the alleged mastermind, after two car bombs ripped through Reyhanli, a small town close to Syria. Syria denied any involvement in the bombings.Turkey's interior minister, Muammer Guler, said an investigation showed that the huge blasts—which damaged almost 500 shops, 300 homes and 60 vehicles—were carried out by a "terrorist organization in close contact with Syria's intelligence agency."
Following the blast residents had attacked Syrian refugees and cars with Syrian number plates after the attacks, witnesses said.
One woman, who earlier Sunday buried a brother-in-law killed in the blast, blamed Turkey's prime minister for bringing Syrians to Reyhanli and demanded they leave the town.
"I don't want this government, I don't want Syrians here. Why weren't they taken somewhere further? We are tired of seeing Syrian fighters, it was the rebels who caused this," said the woman.

'Syrian rebels say Turkey is arming and training them'

Michael Weiss, the Research Director of The Henry Jackson Society, said that the weekend before last he was in Hatay province, in southern Turkey, interviewing Syrian 'rebels' and 'activists', who all complained of the lack of foreign assistance 'in toppling the Assad regime'
Jackson: 'A lot's changed in a week. Rebel sources in Hatay told me last night that not only is Turkey supplying light arms to select battalion commanders, it is also training Syrians in Istanbul. Men from the unit I was embedded with were vetted and called up by Turkish intelligence in the last few days and large consignments of AK-47s are being delivered by the Turkish military to the Syrian-Turkish border. No one knows where the guns came from originally, but no one much cares.
This news, which has provided a much-needed morale boost to Syria's embattled opposition, does appear to corroborate a recent report by the Washington Post that the United States has been facilitating the transfer of Gulf-purchased weapons to the so called rebels:
'The U.S. contacts with the rebel military and the information-sharing with gulf nations mark a shift in Obama administration policy as hopes dim for a political solution to the Syrian crisis. Many officials now consider an expanding military confrontation to be inevitable.
Material is being stockpiled in Damascus, in Idlib near the Turkish border and in Zabadani on the Lebanese border. Opposition activists who two months ago said the rebels were running out of ammunition said this week that the flow of weapons — most still bought on the black market in neighboring countries or from elements of the Syrian military — has significantly increased after a decision by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other gulf states to provide millions of dollars in funding each month.'

Syria condemns terrorist act in Turkey

Al-Zoubi: Turkish Government is to Blame for al-Rihaniyeh Bombings

May 12, 2013

DAMASCUS, (SANA) - Information Minister, Omran al-Zoubi, stressed that the bombings which rocked al-Rihaniya city in Turkey are a terrorist act that is condemned by all moral, human and legal standards, offering condolences to the Turkish people for the martyrs and wishing recovery for the injured.

"Any accusation against Syria in any statement, where explicit or implicit, by any Turkish official is completely rejected," said al-Zoubi addressing the Intellectual Political Symposium which kicked off Sunday at the al-Assad National Library in Damascus.

Minister al-Zoubi, said that the Turkish government led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan is to blame for the bombings in al-Rihaniyeh havign urned the border areas with Syria into "international terrorist concentrations," and turned the Turkish civilians' houses, farms and properties into centers and passages for terrorist groups.

He added that the Turkish government has been facilitating the delivery of weapons, explosive devices, car bombs, money and killers into Syria.

Al-Zoubi held Erdogan and the Turkish government directly responsible, both morally and politically, towards the peoples of Syria and Turkey, the region, and the whole world.

He stressed that what happened in al-Rihaniyeh is blamed on Erdogan and the Justice and Development Party, pointing out that Syria has nothing to do with this as it is not how it behaves.

"We have problems with Turkey since hundreds of years, yet Syria…has never acted this way or done such an act. It's not because we can't, but because the way we were raised and our morals, conduct and values don't allow us to do such a thing," he added.

The Minister reiterated that no one has the right in Turkey to issue arbitrary accusations against Syria, expressing deep sorry over the victims of the bombings in al-Rihaniyeh.

Al-Zoubi wondered how the Turkish Interior Minister has accused Syria of the bombings only then to say that he will prove his accusations when they reach evidence, pointing out that when the Turkish minister says he would reach evidence that means he wants to fabricate one.

Al-Zoubi said big questions need to be answered by the Justice and Development Party and Erdogan government, including what interest do [they] have in destroying Syria? Why going too far in killing and destruction? Why this timing for al-Rihaniyeh operation?

He continued asking "Why should the bombings in Turkey take place days before Erdogan's meeting Obama?...Is it that [Erdogan] wants to show off and say he has enough power to intervene in Syria?... Does Erdogan want to foil the Russian-U.S. efforts to hold an international conference?" al-Zoubi asked.

Al-Zoubi commented on the statements made by the Turkish Foreign Minister yesterday in which he said "Turkey can defend itself" by saying "Against whom does it have to defend itself? Does it have to defend itself against terrorism and terrorists?, noting that the government of Erdogan should shoulder complete responsibility for what happened.

"It Turkey, the state and the people, want to defend themselves, they have to ask Erdogan and his government to step down because they are to blame for what happened," the Information Minister added.

"I ask Erdogan to step down as a murderer and blood shedder and I say to him that that it's not his right to brag out his glories at the expense of the blood of the Turks and the Syrians," al-Zoubi added.

He highlighted the cooperation between the Israeli enemy and the Turkish government, despite the latter's claim of supporting the Palestinian people, referring particularly to Turkish government allowing the Turkish Airlines company to sponsor the Israeli second international fair in occupied Jerusalem and the joint military exercises between Turkey and Israel, reminding that the Israeli enemy has not even apologized for the martyrs of Mavi Marmara.

He stressed that Israel has committed an aggression against Syria recently and raided military sites near Damascus and violated, through this aggression, the international commitments (Disengagement of Forces Agreement), adding that Israel has allowed terrorists to operate inside the demilitarized zone and to kidnap the UN observers.

"Accordingly, Syria has the right at this time and at any other time to deal with the Golan issue in the way the owner has the right to deal with his property, because the Golan is and has always been a Syrian Arab land," said the Information Minister," adding that "Israel must understand that it can't take a promenade in the Syrian sky because the Syrian land and sky are not a promenade for anyone."

He stressed that "The Syrian army and people know very well how to defend Syria," noting that this talk is addressed to "all who think that the circumstances are convenient for them to tamper with the country."

"Everybody should know that we are people who don't forget to respond to an aggression against the aggressors, nor do we forget our martyrs and those who killed them," said al-Zoubi.

He pointed out that the Syrian media is facing a real battle, along with all the state's institutions, in terms of offering martyrs and having to confront great pressures by foreign parties to suppress its voice.

He noted that the Ministry of Information has allowed access to 300 media outlets, including American, French and British because "we believe that it they would convey at least part of the truth, that would be in Syria's interest."

Al-Zoubi indicated that Syria has conducted many investigations into lots of incidents which took place on the borders with Turkey and Jordan and come to know quite well who are the perpetrators and the accomplices.

Answering a question on how Syria's future would be, he said reaching "the renewed Syria" is a national political, economic, social, human and cultural project to which all Syrians should contribute regardless of any differences among them.

Al-Zoubi added that this project cannot be launched without a comprehensive national dialogue that does not exclude anyone.

For his part, Head of the Journalists Union, Elias Murad, said the Syrian people can achieve renewal for themselves and their homeland through the package of decisions which have been issued in the framework of the political reform and the national dialogue project.

Syria: Washington seeking a 'peaceful' solution ?

Israel.obama-israel-netanyahu.jpg

As a reminder

July 20, 2012

'Washington not seeking a peaceful solution for Syria crisis'

Washington has no desire to find a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis and has opted for a forced government change in the country, an American political analyst tells Press TV.
Lawrence Freeman, who works with Executive Intelligence Review, said in an interview on Friday that by arming and funding terrorist groups fighting against the Syrian government, US and other Western countries are trying to force government change.

He also accused Washington of following former British Prime Minister Tony Blair's policy of overturning sovereign nations under the so-called principle of “responsibility to protect” any time the West decides.

''So the US has no policy, has no vision for the future or to help the Syrian people. They are going for (former British premier) Tony Blair’s regime change policy and, by the way, Tony Blair, the author of this policy back in the 90s is now an adviser to [US] President [Barack] Obama,'' Freeman said.

The US analyst also said that Russia and China are opposing forced government change in Syria not only because of their ties with Damascus, but also because they want to stop this policy, since it might be aimed against them as well.

After Libya "the Russians, in particular, realize that this policy of overturning sovereign nations is also going to be aimed at them. China has a similar concern so they are going to fight this out. Not because of any immediate interest in Syria per se, although they have one, but because of a larger principle of stopping this policy," Freeman said.

Freeman's remarks came after Moscow and Beijing vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution against the Syrian government, which called for new sanctions against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.

President al-Assad: Israeli Aggression Unveils Involvement of Israeli Occupation, Countries supporting it in Event in Syria

President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday said that the latest Israeli aggression on Syria unveils the volume of involvement of the Israeli occupation, regional and western countries which support it in the current events in Syria.

"The Syrian people and their brave army which gain important achievements in combating terrorism and the Takfiri groups are able to confront the Israeli risks which constitute one face of this terrorism which targets Syria daily," President al-Assad who received Iranian foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said.

Talks during the meeting dealt with the latest developments in the region and the dangers threatening it after the Israeli aggression on Syria.

The Iranian Foreign Minister expressed his country's strong condemnation of the Israeli flagrant aggression on Syrian territories, affirming Iran's standing by Syria in the face of the Israeli attempts to destabilize the region and weaken the resistance axis.

He added that time has come for deterring the Israeli occupation from carrying out such aggressions against peoples of the region.

The talks also tackled cooperation between Syria and Iran and the commitment of both countries to boost them in all domains.

The delegation accompanying Salehi, Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid al-Moallem, Presidential Political and Media Advisor Buthaina Shaaban, Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minster Fayssal Mikdad attended the meeting.

In statements to journalists after the meeting, Salehi said his meeting with President al-Assad was good, and that they discussed bilateral relations, regional developments and the crisis in Syria, adding "we discovered that things are going well in Syria, and that the valiant Syrian Army reclaimed many areas… Syria will recover in the near future."

Salehi affirmed that bilateral relations between Syria and Iran are continuing in all fields, voicing readiness to increase aid to Syrians and provide the basic necessities of the Syrian people.

"We are fully confident that Syria will emerge victorious from the crisis because the Syrian people have right on their side as does the Syrian government because it emerged from the will of the people and there's considerable harmony between them," he said, adding that without the steadfastness of the Syrian people for two years and their support for the Army and the government, no government could have withstood such a vicious attack.

Salehi asserted optimism over the future of Syria which he said is moving in the right direction towards victory, stressing that Iran will not accept any external interference and that the Syrian people are the only ones who may decide upon their own future.

He said that the Israeli aggression on sites in Syria revealed to the world the truth of the false allegations of the mercenaries fighting the Syrian Army and how this aggression was timed with their murdering of innocents.

"Now matters are clear… how Israel shows solidarity with mercenaries and how mercenaries put their hands in the hands of Zionists… we said since the beginning of the crisis that Syria is a main ring in the chain of resistance, which is the cause of these pressures," Salehi said, noting that despite how clear matters have become, some sides refuse to acknowledge them.

In turn, Minister al-Moallem said that Salehi conducted a productive meeting with President al-Assad, with the two sides' viewpoints being in agreement due to the ongoing coordination and consultation between the two leaderships in the current circumstances.

In response to a question on concerns over a war on Syria, al-Moallem pointed out that Syria has been facing an internal war for two years which is also a regional and international war targeting the Syria people, adding "we're used to this… we're not concerned but we're prepared to defend ourselves and our people and we will not abide by aggression."

On the possibility of activating the mutual shield agreement with Iran, al-Moallem said that everyone must know that before the crisis in Syria and during it, Iran's leadership and people stood alongside Syria to a degree that surpassed the mutual defense agreement, adding that the two countries are cooperating in all economic and political fields and have identical positions.

As a reminder:

‘NileSat, Arabsat Suspend Broadcast of Syrian Satellite Channels’

5-9-2012

SYRIA – News Home Page

DAMASCUS, (SANA) – NileSat Company suspended broadcasting the Syrian satellite channels in a unilateral procedure unjustifiably violating terms of the contract signed with the Company and the Media Code of Ethics, Ministry of Information said on Wednesday.

This procedure contradicts principles of media work in an unacceptable and blatant way within the framework of the campaign targeting Syria, the statement added.
The Ministry stressed its condemnation of this violation and considered it as direct evidence on its administrators’ bias to the side of the plot launched against the Syrian state and people, adding that this behavior serves the Zionist scheme.

The Ministry called upon the NileSat Satellite Company to refrain from its behavior and adhere to the legal regulations in this regard.
In a similar statement, the Ministry of Information announced that the Arab Satellite Communications Organization (Arabsat) cut broadcasting the Syrian satellite channels in line with NileSat Company which has already carried out its role in the Zionist project that aimed at silencing the voice of the homeland and contributing to the deception, fabrication and the falsification of facts.

The Ministry condemned this behavior which violates the simplest rules of the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU) law and Syria’s rights which should be preserved according to these rules.
The Ministry considered this procedure as flagrant violation of media code of ethics and principles of journalistic work, calling upon the Arabsat administration to refrain from its decision and commit to the law and morals of media.

The Ministry called upon Syrian citizens to watch the Syrian channels on the terrestrial channels and the Eutelsat and Hotbird on the following frequencies:

The Syrian TV Satellite Channel Eutelsat 11680 horizontal.
The Syrian al-Ikhbariya TV Channel Eutelsat 11390 vertical.
Addounia TV Channel Eutelsat 10922 vertical.
The Syrian TV Satellite Channel Hotbird 12015 horizontal.

On a relevant note, the Information Ministry said that the live feed of the Syrian Satellite Channel and Al-Ikhbariya TV can be viewed online at the General Organization of Radio and TV website

Union of Syrian Journalists Denounces Suspending Broadcast of Syrian Satellite Channels as Media Piracy

Union of Syrian Journalists denounced the NileSat administration’s decision to suspend the broadcast of Syrian satellite channels as media piracy against national media and the freedom of the word.
The Union said in a statement on Wednesday that this step came in implementation of the decision of the Council of the Arab Foreign Ministers which called upon the NileSat and Arabsat administrations to stop broadcasting the Syrian satellite channels which is unexpected since these organizations signed contracts and had legal obligations regarding the Syrian channels.

The statement added that the union addressed all Arab journalist unions and the International Federation of Journalists to condemn this move and to call upon the administration of NileSat to refrain from their decision in accordance with the minimum level of moral principles and international conventions, particularly the UN Charter on the freedom of opinion and expression.
The union concluded that the Syrian national media with all its institutions and cadres which confronted the conspiracy is able to find ways that help it continue conveying the truth to the Syrian people and the Arab and international public opinion.

National Media Council: NileSat, Arabsat Decision to Suspend Syrian Channels Illegal

The National Media Council stressed that the NileSat and Arabsat decision to suspend the broadcast of the Syrian satellite channels is illegal and condemned as it came under the war against Syria.
The Council considered these procedures as completion of criminal acts that targeted the Syrian media institutions and the journalists, stressing that such terrorist acts aimed at silencing the voice of the Syrian media which presented to the local and international public opinion the reality of what is taking place on the ground exposing the campaign of lies and fabrications led by Arab and western media.
The Council added that it reserved its right to take necessary legal procedures to prosecute the two companies and all media outlets that violate rules of the journalist work.

It added that all attempts targeting the Syrian media will fail as it belongs to the Syrian people and convey the reality, stressing that the national media will preserve its professionalism to expose the fabrications of other media.

Kerry in Moscow to press US agenda against Syria

US Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in Moscow in a high profile bid to press top Russian officials against backing the Syrian government amid the recent US-backed Israeli aggression against the nation.

Issues surrounding Israeli aerial and missile strikes against Syrian installations are widely expected to be the top agenda in the talks as the US has announced a major effort to begin providing military aid for foreign-backed militant gangs, trying to remove President Bashar al-Assad from power, press reports said Tuesday.

Russia has already expressed major concerns over the Israeli attacks and warned that such acts of aggression threaten to expand tensions to neighboring countries.

Despite growing US-led pressures on Moscow to halt its support for the Syrian government, Russia has so far resisted efforts by the US and its allies to wage a direct military intervention against Syria, insisting that the crisis will have to be resolved diplomatically.

Kerry will meet with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, although the two greatly disagree on the events in Syria and the future of President Bashar al-Assad.

This while the Obama administration has recently said it does not rule out providing arms for the militant gangs in Syria which include al-Qaeda-linked terrorist elements.

Ahead of Kerry's visit to Moscow, Russia's foreign ministry called on the West to stop politicizing the issue of chemical weapons in Syria,.

This is while Carla Del Ponte, a member of the UN commission probing the alleged use of the nerve gas sarin in Syria, announced on Sunday that the country’s opposition forces, and not the Assad regime, were behind the use of chemical weapons.

There are "strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof" of sarin gas being used "on the part of the opposition, the rebels, not by the government authorities," she reportedly told a Swiss-Italian television outlet.

Following his visit to Russia, Kerry is to travel to Rome to meet with Italian, Israeli and Jordanian officials to discuss Middle East issues, including the Syrian situation.

He also said that the aggression confirms Israel's involvement along with its supporters in the US and western Europe in shedding Syrian blood and preventing a cessation of violence and terrorism, all of which aims to weaken Syria and undermine its regional and international standing.

Al-Moallem stressed that Syria has the right to respond to such aggressions as per international law and the UN Charter.

For his part, Lavrov affirmed Russia's commitment to Syria's stability, voicing concern over the violation of its sovereignty and territories and warning over the increasing chances of developments that cannot be controlled in the region.

Explosions Hit Scientific Research Center in Jamraya Caused by an Israeli Rocket Attack

May 5, 2013

Several explosions hit al-Hameh area in Damascus countryside on Sunday.

Initial information indicated that the explosions took place in Jamraya and targeted the Scientific Research Center there causing casualties.

The information also indicated that these explosions have been caused by Israeli rocket attacks.

The new Israeli aggression is a clear attempt to raise the gunmen morale after the painful blows they received at the hands of our valiant army in several places and after the achievements which were realized on the ground by our armed forces to restore security and stability to Syria.

The new Israeli aggression shows the direct involvement of the Zionist entity in the conspiracy against Syria and the relationship that links the armed terrorist groups with the Israeli hostile schemes backed by the Western, regional and some Gulf states.

Senior Israeli Official Admits Aggression on Jamraya Center

Meanwhile, a high ranking Israeli official admitted that Israel launched an aggression on Syria early Sunday.

AFP quoted the Israeli official, who asked not to be named, as saying that Israel launched an air attack early Sunday morning on sites in Damascus Countryside using "Iranian weapons" as a pretext.

The Israeli official added that Israel's air force is at a very high level of readiness to face any possibility.

US President Barack Obama reiterated in a statement on Saturday thatIsrael has the right to work to defend itself.

President al-Assad Inaugurates Memorial of Syrian Universities' Martyrs

May 04, 2013

President Bashar al-Assad on Saturday participated with thousands of students in the inauguration of the memorial of Syrian Universities' Martyrs at Damascus University.

After the inauguration ceremony, President al-Assad talked with the families of the martyrs and a group of students, stressing that the  terrorist groups targeted university students and institutions because of their obscurantist ideology.

President al-Assad added that these groups which are fighting the Syrian people  and their regional and western supporters could not bear the statue of Abu al-Alaa al-Maarri or the Suspension Bridge of Der Ezzor, which is a cultural monument, so they will not bear the idea of Syrian youths who are armed with knowledge to confront their obscurantism and criminality.

President al-Assad asserted that Syria gave the alphabet to the world which enabled the whole humanity to start writing, and Syria gave science, literature and architecture to the whole world, pointing out that as it was, Syria will remain.

The students stressed that they will continue defending Syria through pursuing knowledge and protecting the infrastructure of their universities.

The inauguration ceremony started with observing a moment of silence for the souls of the martyrs, and then the national anthem was played.

Israel bombs Syria: intelligence chief of Israel was in Washington

Israel.obama-israel-netanyahu.jpg

AS A REMINDER

‘Just what the Middle East needed — an attack on Syria by Israel’

January 31, 2013

It was surely no accident that the intelligence chief of Israel was in Washington, for talks at the Pentagon, on the same day that the Israel’s attacks on Syria happened.

Israel launched an air attack on its neighbour Syria on the night of Tuesday and Wednesday this week. When Israel bombs another country then it’s big news. And it’s rarely coincidental.
So it was surely as they say no accident that the intelligence chief of the Israeli army, the IDF, Major-General Aiv Kochavi, landed in Washington on the same day that the attacks happened, for talks at the Pentagon with the US chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, Martin Dempsey.
The US was told of the attack in advance but has so far made no condemnation or criticism of the action. This has been left to the Russians, allies of the Syrian government, who have said that the attack violates the UN charter.
Its foreign ministry said “If this information is confirmed, then we are dealing with unprovoked attacks on targets on the territory of a sovereign country, which blatantly violates the UN charter and is unacceptable, no matter the motives to justify it.”
The target of the attack was a plant near Damascus and convoys of weapons heading to the Lebanese border. The narrative put by the Israelis was that these were quantities of anti aircraft weapons being transported to safety from Syria’s civil war into the hands of Hezbollah in Lebanon. There is once again talk of the need to defend against Syria’s alleged possession of chemical weapons.
Iran, a close ally of Syria and Hezbollah and itself under constant threat of an Israeli attack, has already said that it considers an attack on Syria as on itself. Both countries are saying there will be retaliation for the air raid, possibly on Tel Aviv.
This latest escalation of war in a Middle East country can worsen an already extremely dangerous situation. Israel has long threatened an attack on Iran’s nuclear installations, and has talked about this summer as the optimum time to do so. And although Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu did much worse in the recent elections than he thought, he must gamble on gaining support through such a move and facing little opposition politically.
The special relationship with the US may be put under some strain by Israel’s tactics, but there will be grudging acceptance at least of Israel’s actions.
The calculation is that in such an event, Israel will need to deal with Iran’s allies in the region. Hence the attacks on Syria. Israel has become increasingly worried at the civil war in Syria and at weapons ‘falling into the wrong hands’. Yet the paradox here is that groups have been armed and funded by Middle East and western regimes that want to overthrow Assad in Syria.
Meanwhile in another part of the war zone, David Cameron is doing a tour of North African capitals to drum up support for the latest military adventure in the ‘war on terror’. Following his visit to Algeria (to talk about war and terrorism) he then landed in Libya, where we were told “the security situation has deteriorated” since his last intervention there in 2011.
Then the air strikes there killed an estimated 30,000 but solved none of the basic problems and divisions. The country is still war torn and split, and British citizens were told to leave Benghazi last week because of threats to their security.
It takes a millionaire Old Etonian whose previous job was in PR to have the brass neck to sell another intervention — this time in Mali — following so fast from the failed one in Libya. David Cameron is determined to join with France, the other major former colonial power in this part of Africa, in a war supposedly to eradicate Islamic terrorism but which takes its urgency from the need to protect and control the wealth and resources so central to European energy supplies.
The troops now being sent may be symbolic. But that was what the US thought when it intervened in Vietnam over 50 years ago. The geographical reach of the war is widening. And both sides are beginning to join up the dots.

Israeli general: Syrian ‘regime has used and is using chemical weapons’
Military intelligence chief’s assertion puts pressure on US over its pledge to intervene…
Israel’s top intelligence analyst on Tuesday accused the Syrian regime of using lethal chemical weapons in an assertion that puts pressure on the US over its pledge to intervene should Damascus cross what it has described as a “red line”.
Brigadier-General Itai Brun, head of military intelligence research at the Israeli Defence Forces, told a security conference in Tel Aviv that the lack of international response to the use of a chemical suspected to be the nerve gas sarin was a “very worrying development”.
He said: “There’s a huge arsenal of chemical weapons in Syria. Our assessment is that the [Assad] regime has used and is using chemical weapons.”
Although the Pentagon and state department insisted on Tuesday there was no appetite for intervention in Syria, the US secretary of state, John Kerry, speaking at a Nato meeting in Brussels, called on the alliance to make preparations to respond in the event of chemical weapons endangering one of its members, Turkey.

US officials: Israelis launch airstrikes into Syria…
Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes against targets inside Syria on Friday, U.S. officials told NBC News.
It’s believed the primary target was a shipment of weapons headed for Hezbollah in Lebanon, they said. A senior U.S. official said the airstrikes were believed to be related to delivery systems for chemical weapons.
An Israeli spokesman in Washington said that Israel would not comment specifically on the reports but said that “Israel is determined to prevent the transfer of chemical weapons or other game-changing weaponry by the Syrian regime to terrorists, especially to Hezbollah in Lebanon.”
It wasn’t clear whether the Israelis alerted the U.S. before the attack. White House officials referred all questions to the Israelis.

Israel launches air strike on Syria…
The early morning strike on Friday targeted “game-changing” weapons believed to be long-range missiles, an Israeli official told the Associated Press.
This is the second Israeli strike on a Syrian arms target this year. After the bombing of weapons convoy carrying long-range missiles to the Lebanese border in January, Israel warned it would not hesitate to act again to prevent the transfer of chemical or any other advanced weaponry from Bashar al-Assad’s massive arsenal to terror groups in Lebanon.
The Israeli government has called on the United States to take steps to safe guard the Assad regime’s chemical weapons store, which is believed to be among the largest in the world.
