Health Minister Calls on International Organizations to Help in Rehabilitating Health Institutions in Syria

May 24, 2013

Health Minister, Dr. Saad al-Nayef discussed on Friday with Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Margaret Chan the efforts to meet the health needs of citizens amid the current situation in Syria.

Al-Nayef reviewed the damage caused to the health sector and its cadres due to the incessant attacks of the armed terrorist groups.

The minister invited Dr. Chan to visit Syria and get a close look at the health conditions and the services provided by hospitals and health centers to citizens despite the pressure, indicating that ''the health sector is under a methodical disinformation campaign waged by the countries hostile to Syria.''

The minister indicated that the ministry is focusing its care at the current stage on enhancing partnership with the civil sector and meeting health needs in society, pointing out that ''around 62 NGOs are backing the public sector'' in its humanitarian and relief work to deliver health services to those in need.

He urged the international organizations for ''more cooperation and financial and technical support to the health sector in Syria and help in rehabilitating the affected health institutions.''

For her part, Dr. Chan said the organization will continue to support the Syrian government to meet the health needs in all areas, expressing solidarity with the Syrian people.

Chan added that she saw first-hand the development of the health sector in Syria during an earlier visit, adding that the organization is fully committed to delivering all kinds of medical help to Syria via border crossings and in cooperation with the governmental bodies concerned.

The meeting comes on the sidelines of the WHO 66th session that started Monday and lasts until May 28, with the participation of 194 countries.
