Moscow, (SANA)- Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said the abduction of the nuns of St. Thecla Convent in Maaloula town in Damascus Countryside is a criminal act that necessitates unifying the efforts to impose the severest penalty on the perpetrators and their supporters.
In an interview with SANA reporter on the sidelines of an annual meeting of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society, held by Moscow branch of the Society on Thursday, Bogdanov said his country directly condemned "the crime which the extremists committed" in attacking St. Thecla convent and kidnapping the nuns and Mother Belagia.
"We consider this as a totally unacceptable criminal act that must not only be condemned, as we rather believe that its perpetrators and their supporters must receive the severest punishment," he added.
"We are waiting for quick and effective measures to release the abductees hoping for understanding by all of our partners to unify our efforts so as to reach their immediate release," said Bogdanov.
He voiced Russia's support for all the spectra of the Syrian people with all the "sects and representatives of other religions".
